First leg of the trip

Oct 10, 2007 22:12

We're stopped just outside of Erie, past Buffalo. We didn't make it out of NY state today, but we're damn close. We'll make it before afternoon tomorrow if we get going early enough.

Got up around 9 this morning, after our cell phones failed to wake us at first at 8, when I intended to get up. I finished packing up my toiletries and night stuff, everything I'd had to use. Loaded up the car, which took longer than I would have liked, but on the other hand, it's not actually quite as full as I had worried it might be. It's a tight fit, but not all the way up covering up the rear window or anything.

We left just before 11, saying goodbye to my kitty cat, my mom and my dad. We stopped quick at the bank to deposit the check my parents gave me for a new computer and TV. (We left one of our TVs behind for mom's office in exchange.) Then it was onward to route 90 west. We had to stop pretty much first thing to fill up the gas tank (still not empty, btw) and get some caffeine. Then it was straight on to Syracuse. We had a planned stop there, since we've visited several times, and it was on the way.

First stop was Rosamund Gifford Zoo, which is a fairly small but still pretty cool zoo. Got a number of pictures, even of some animals, like the Red Wolf, that are usually pretty elusive. It was a quiet day there, we figure that's why. Pictures, however, will have to wait, because we currently lack the right USB cable for the camera, and we don't have a card reader, either. We TRIED to get one today... but apparently a Kodak cable is hard to come by, and most other places don't make cables with the right ends. So we spent a couple hours at the zoo, wandering around and cooing at the animals and then we moved on to the mall. At the mall is "the plushie store" (not its real name), which is, of course, all about the selling of plush. It's the only place like it anywhere NEAR our old home base, and that's still 2 hours away. So we stopped there to look around and say goodbye. I ended up buying a $15 kitty cat that looks kind of like my kitty, who I miss a lot already. I almost cried in the plushie store, holding this thing. Then we made a search of the electronics type stores in the mall for a cable... but nothing.

It's kind of sad that I'm pretty much mostly enthusiastic about visiting the many zoos on the way out west. There's TWO in Chicago!! There's the zoo AND the Desert Museum in Tucson! Depending on schedule, money, etc... we could even make a stop at the San Diego Zoo. Apparently I am all about the zoos. Or at least I am right now.

Then it was just... onward. Westward. Called my brother to let him know the move was underway. Let my mate drive for a while. That was rather nerve wracking. He's a fairly new driver, and it's MY car, and well... I don't relinquish my car to ANYONE lightly, and to a driver I KNOW hasn't had a lot of hours under his belt, much as I love him, it was HARD for me. That lasted about an hour. I'll get used to it eventually, maybe.

After going until my shoulder was tense enough to be interrupting the circulation in my arm (it was feeling cold and tingly in spots), and I was thinking longingly of stopping and having a nice TV and shower and bed, we pulled off after Buffalo to this Econolodge, which is where we are now. 50 bucks for the night, and free Wi Fi. I'm sold. Bed's smaller than I'd really like, but... 50 bucks and free Wi Fi. And cross country road trip. I mean, yeah.

Apparently we haven't heard back from the apartment yet, but we've got backups.

At some point, I also need to call the stores out there and see which one I'm working at. That would be, you know, good to know.

So yeah, it's been hard, and we're not even out of state yet, but we're doing it. It's weird and disconcerting, but WE ARE DOING IT.

Time for a bit of browsing, a bit of WoW maybe (the laptop is weird, but I might anyway), and lots of sleep. We'll make it out of state tomorrow, and with any luck, land somewhere with Wi Fi again. (We'll see, it could be a couple days.)
