Kitchener-Waterloo Little Theatre proudly presents:

Les Liasions Dangereuses, by Christopher Hampton

at the rebuilt Kitchener-Waterloo Little Theatre, located in Uptown Waterloo at 9 Princess St. E.

"Stepping into the emotional minefield of sexual games and interpersonal politics is never easy, but the hardworking cast of KWLT's upcoming production of "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" seems to strike a balance of seductive playfulness and tragic pathos in an array of surprisingly complex characters. Hampton's 1985 adaptation of the 18th century morality novel remains crisp in any context, and the cast is doing an excellent job of using the script as a lens into human relational issues such as desire and jealousy, and the pervasive underlying fear of being alone, without love, that drives us all to some degree. It is a joy to explore these relationships with them, to see these complexities come to life in the rehearsal process as the
characters gel in the actors' minds."

Hampton's stageplay about the consequences of treating love, seduction, and desire as sport provides an excellent opportunity to study the depths of human character when caught by surprise in intensely complex emotional webs. The Vicomte de Valmont reveals himself a surprisingly tragic figure as he discovers love for the first time only in the midst of seducing the pious Madame de Tourvel to her own fall from grace. The coldly manipulative graces of his long-time counterpart in "the game", Madame de Merteuil, also influence others as, in their multi-faceted personal games Merteuil and Valmont strive to make-over an innocent convent-educated girl and her paramour in their own warped likenesses. When the inevitable resulting tragedy tumbles all of the characters from their complacent positions, an older, wiser character sadly remarks, "Those most worthy of love are never made happy by it".

KWLT proudly presents this remarkable interpretation of Hampton's original classic.
