Each snowflake that fell seemed to pile onto his heart. They’d sprinkle down from the grey clouds - twisting, twirling, and dancing, only to lightly flutter against the window and melt against the glass. The world had fallen silent as the snow began to trickle from the skies, blanketing the landscape in an icy comforter. Sipping at his hot chocolate, Die pressed a warm hand to the window. The sudden chill electrocuted his fingers, sending a chill down his spine. “I’m going for a walk, Aoi,” Die suddenly heard himself say, as he turned to look at the black-haired man that sat slumped over on the bed. Die strolled to the other side of the room and placed his coffee mug on the ring-stained dresser. “Die,” came Aoi’s voice in a barely audible whisper. Die froze for a moment, his eyes fixed on his coat that was carelessly strewn over bedpost. “Don’t,” said Die coldly, pursing his lips together tightly. He snatched up his mug and slid a clear, glass coaster over the slightly visible coffee mug ring. “Just… don’t,” he repeated in a hushed whisper, placing the mug back onto the dresser. Aoi remained silent, and Die crossed the room to retrieve his coat. “I’ll be back later,” he muttered, slipping through the door.

Die’s sneakers crunched through the fresh snow as he trudged through what had once been a rather green field. He felt that it was only yesterday that he had watched a group of school children romping about and failing miserably at bringing their kite into flight as the warm summer sun had beat down on them. Die lifted his head and scanned the area, his eyes finding nothing but white for what seemed like miles. Several dead cherry-blossom trees dotted the landscape, their dark, leafless twigs piercing the grey sky. Stuffing his hands into his coat pocket, Die wandered over to the nearest one and stared up at the fragile twigs that splintered away from the branches. As he began to feel the tears stinging the corners of his eyes, he told himself that it was simply the wind drying out his eyes. He wouldn’t let himself cry. Not here. Not now. A sudden gust of bitterly cold wind penetrated his black coat, cutting right through his skin and swirling through his body. Before he could stop himself, Die felt a sob rising in his throat. He placed his arms against the tree trunk and rested his head against them as his body began to shake with grief. Warm, salty tears traveled down his flushed cheeks and dropped into the snow. “It’s okay Die,” came a voice, and Die stiffened as he felt a familiar pair of arms wrap around his waist. Die allowed his arms to fall away from the tree and slowly lifted his head, allowing himself to fall back against the man standing behind him. Looking up at the tree branches, Die blinked the tears from his eyes and exhaled as he felt the tiny snowflakes beginning to graze his cheeks. “It’s okay,” Aoi repeated, “It isn’t dead. It won’t ever die. This tree will bloom again in the spring.”
