You could talk about anything with Nino. He could not seem interested but he would always listen attentively to anyone's talk.
But of course, things were different when the main subject was about Nino's feelings.
He never liked to talk about his personal feelings. With no one. It was unfair since he didn't mind talking about other people's love lives so openly. But when it was about him, his brain would stop working, the words would get stuck in his throat, his mouth would get dry and he would forget how to formulate coherent sentences.
Timidity or just denial of expressing his own emotions; neither Nino himself could explain that. It simply happened, as a switch in him was pushed, turning his rational self off.
So it made him pretty much obvious. Whenever the name of someone he liked appeared in the conversation, he got quiet and looked away from whom was talking with him.
His friends had already realized about that and teased him constantly.
Except for one man.
The man Nino knew long enough to call his "best friend". The man Nino knew well enough to list all the things he liked and disliked in alphabetical order. The man Nino knew long and well enough to fall for.
"...Then Aiba-chan threw dog food on it!" Sho laughed patting Nino's shoulder, expecting the younger man to laugh with him. But there was no response "Nino?" a tug on his sleeve. And Sho was ignored again "Wait. Are you... No way! Do you like Aiba?"
"Shut up!" Nino smacked Sho's head before curl up embarrassingly on the couch "I don't..."
"Hey, it's alright. I can tell him if you're too shy-"
"Don't you dare!" Nino yelled jumping on Sho, pointing a finger on his face "Do it and you're dead, Sho! Dead!"
The older idol just laughed holding Nino's hand down.
"Calm down! I was just kidding! I won't tell anybody about that."
Then, Aiba entered in the green room, going straight to the sofa his band mates were sharing.
"Tell what?" he asked grinning at Sho, who got up shrugging.
Aiba then tormented Nino bombarding him with questions while the slender man kept silent, shifting on his corner of the couch. It continued till Jun came and scolded Aiba for annoying Nino.
Aiba Masaki, the insensitive guy that wouldn't recognize love even if it ran in front of his eyes setting off fireworks.
Why him? Nino didn't know.
He was silly, stupid, noisy and too high-minded most of the time. But his silliness made him stupidly handsome and his voice somehow put a spell on people around him, making everyone giddy, feeling an urge to laugh with him.
But Aiba was also serious when he needed to be. He was dedicated to what he liked and cared about people before caring about himself.
Maybe all these things messed up together made Nino fall for him. Fall for that man that was far from being perfect, but was the most precious thing in Nino's eyes.
Although, a few things didn't let Nino confess to such man:
First, Nino's shyness.
He didn't care appearing on TV or dressing up as a girl in front of thousands of people. But confessing to someone was completely different. It was personal, it was intense, it required all his soul and courage.
Second, their current relationship.
They knew each other since their Junior days, they were best friends and worked together for more than 10 years now. It felt odd confessing to someone Nino knew for so long and so damn well - although, he couldn't imagine how Aiba would react or what he would say; and it made things even more scary.
Third, Aiba was a man.
Nino never cared about gender. And everybody knew Aiba was the type of guy that liked physical contact with any and everyone. But as long as Nino knew, Aiba had only dated girls and never mentioned anything involving men in his private life. Not to mention the troubles he would put Arashi into if the media discovered Ninomiya Kazunari liked men and was in love with his band mate Aiba Masaki.
Liking Aiba was dangerous indeed.
-----
"How long has it been? Three, four years?"
"Five years." Nino corrected shooting his death glare to the older man.
"So you should make a move! Things won't change if you stay quiet Nino." Sho said in a serious tone.
"I know."
"Aiba seems to be comprehensive..."
"I know."
"...The worst that may happen is being rejected by Aiba."
"I know!" Nino threw his fork on the table and stood up angrily, leaving the cafeteria.
"Where are you going?" Sho asked surprised.
"I'm going to confess to Aiba!" lucky them the cafeteria was empty. Otherwise, Nino wouldn't just confess that he would confess to someone like that.
If it wasn't for Sho's tease, Nino would have never decided to do that. But after Sho came to know about his a-bit-more-than-a-crush for Aiba, whenever they met, he talked about it. At that point Nino wished someone else other than Sho had discovered it. Or that he wasn't that obvious about his personal feelings.
Nino went to Arashi's green room but Aiba wasn't there. That man loved to walk around the studio buildings so it would probably be a long journey to find him.
He looked through the corridors, went to the bathrooms and even visited some green rooms and filming studios and asked the security guards about Aiba. He was nowhere to be found.
When Nino exited the last studio though, he saw the so familiar back going to the other side of the building.
"Aiba-san!" Nino called. Too distracted with the other man, he didn't notice the huge door closing. It was too late when he realized; he let out a yelp as his fingers started stinging, the pain running through his entire hand.
"Nino! Are you okay?" Aiba came quickly to him, holding the small hand gently.
"I'm fine." Nino lied but his fingers were starting to get red and swollen. His hand shook by the pain he was feeling.
"It must hurt! But don't worry." saying so, Aiba brought Nino's hand to his lips and kissed the injured fingers delicately. Nino could only stare as his heart raced, pounding loudly in his ears "Aiba-chan's kiss heals anything!"
Nino's cheeks flushed and he forgot how to breathe. After staring at Aiba's grinning face for a while, he pulled his hand close to his body and smacked Aiba's head with the other hand.
"I-idiot! It still hurts!" he said to hide his embarrassment.
"But it will feel better soon! I promise!" Aiba continued, as telling a kid a magical spell to make the pain go away "By the way, why did you call me? Were you looking for me?"
For a brief moment Nino forgot why he was looking for that man. The image of those beautiful lips touching his skin was enough to even make him forget his own name. He shook his head and giggled dismissing the question.
"Never mind. Let's go back to the green room."
Aiba nodded and took large steps to the opposite side he was going earlier. While that, Nino kept standing in front of the studio's door, looking to his swollen fingers. They were still stinging, not by real pain, but by the sensation of Aiba's lips on them. Nino could still feel the warmth and softness of those lips. Real, so real.
Nino made sure no one was around and that Aiba was in a safe distance before bring his hand to his mouth and kissing exactly the same place Aiba had kissed a few minutes ago. It was stupid, but Nino felt his cheeks getting hotter and his heart melting with that.
"Come on Nino! The others must be waiting for us!" Aiba turned back to call for him.
Nino waved at the taller man and ran towards him. Perhaps he could confess to Aiba some other day.
