no plot, no problem!

i've been joking that i don't "need" a plot to succeed at nanowrimo but the more i think about it, the more i think i need a little more structure. by no means will i be plotting it out in detail (and i don't think i'll even determine the ending until i'm half way through it) but i decided what i needed was a more substantial premise and at least the beginnings of a plot.

how are you approaching the plot? do you know how it's going begin, develop, and more importantly, do you know how it's going to "end"? do you only have the barest premise that you're working with and everything else will fall into place?

the work and thinking i'm doing pre-nanowrimo is mostly around characters and premise. what's driving the characters, who they are, what is the point of the novel rather than a plot with a beginning, conflict, body, climax, conclusion. neither of my novels have a pre-determined climax but rather they're about the characters and their demons/inner struggles. in one, a brother-sister relationship forms the centre piece but the other is more about the individuals in an ensemble kind of "cast". i do have some ideas for "scenes" for the first idea... it's definitely the more thought-out idea of the two.

i think the first one will be easier to write and also more of an emotive reading/writing experience. while the latter will be more challenging for me but also a more light-hearted read (assuming i ever share this with friends).

so, tell me about your planning and your opinions on planning. do you already know how it will end?
