I grabbed Madhur Jaffrey's World Vegetarian because I was interested in having a more plant based diet and I found it was a great find because I love it.  Jaffrey's writing style is engaging and polished, the recipes are clear and easy to follow and the background she gives the recipes are fascinating. She is an Indian and has many recipes from the ( Read more... )

That does sound good. I'll tentatively add it to the to-buy list, just for the excellent write-up you did.

Thanks. I've been enjoying it. I've cooked from it every night since I bought it and it has even been a great read.

Two more awesome vegetarian cookbooks by POC authors, in case you want to expand your collection: Classic Vegetarian Cooking from the Middle East & North Africa by Habeeb Salloum, and Classic Indian Vegetarian and Grain Cooking by Julie Sahni.

Thanks for those rec. I do want to expand my collection. I think I'll be eating this way for along time. They both sound like what I'm looking for.

Wow, this sounds wonderful. I am putting it on my list of potential gifts for my Mum, who loves to experiment, and my sisters too, who are actually vegetarian.

Great review!

I was surprised the author described herself as a part-time vegetarian. I suppose I expected the author of a Vegetarian cookbook to be a vegetarian, but the recipes respect the ingredients and the act of being vegetarian. At least I thought so.

She's the best. One of her books made me fall in love with India, about fifteen years ago. I've dragged it all over the world. I want to be her when I grow up.

I loved her writing as much as I loved the recipes.

Ooh. This is definitely going on my to-watch-for list.

As for vegetarian cookbooks by PoC, I personally love Alternative Vegan by Dino Sarma. It's all produce-based, no meat or dairy substitutes...which is a nice change for a vegan cookbook!

Thanks for the rec. I'm going to look out for the book. I think vegan cookbooks should celebrate the ingredients not try to pass for meat.
