Kath's 49 & 50

Hey! I accidentally reached 50! I had no idea I was so close. I guess I'll aim for 60 for the year, since I still have so much time left.

#49 was another book on CD, but unabridged, so I'm counting it. It was A Wedding in December by Anita Shreve. I quite enjoy hers, as mentioned before, so it was goodish. I think that her analysis of how important high school friends really are differs from person to person (my university friends are by far more important to me, at least at this moment - I am reconnecting with some high school friends now thanks to Facebook, but I do have to wonder if I ever would have without that wonderous invention). Anyway, as always, a good read, but nothing earth-shattering.

#50 is Stealing Athena by Karen Essex. It's taken me about a month to get through this, mostly because I was busy, not because it's not good. It's about the Elgin Marbles (the statues taken from the Parthenon by Lord Elgin in the 18th Century), told from the point of view of Elgin's wife Mary. It also told the story of Pericles's courtesan, Aspasia, in complementary sections. Basically it was a book about females taking control of their lives, in a lot of ways. The ending was quite surprising, especially for an historical about "real" people. I enjoyed this one as much as Essex's Leonardo's Swans, which I read last year. I will definitely continue to check out her work.
