Books I read in the last month:

#16
Title: Ill Wind (Weather Warden 01)
Author: Rachel Caine
Genre: Sci-fi, Fantasy
Summary:

(from B&N) Joanne Baldwin is a Weather Warden. Usually, all it takes is a wave of her hand to tame the most violent weather. But now, she's trying to outrun another kind of storm: accusations of corruption and murder. So, she's resorting to the very human tactic of running for her life...
Her only hope is Lewis, the most powerful warden known. Unfortunately, he's stolen not one but three bottles of Djinn-making him the most wanted man on earth. Still, she's racing hard to find him-before the bad weather closes in fast...

By granting you the possession of one of the Association’s Djinn, the Wardens Association has recognized that you are among the finest in your area of specialty, whether you control Weather, Fire, or Earth. You should accept this great honor and grave responsibility with humility and courage.

Notes: Give me a kick-ass girl with a super cool power and a talent for troubles; pair up said girl with an hot guy; throw their way some evil forces to mess them up and I'm happy. Also, an happy ending would be appreciated!

Title: Heat Stroke (Weather Warden 02)
Author: Rachel Caine
Genre: Sci-fi, Fantasy
Summary:
(from B&N) Mistaken for a murderer, Weather Warden Joanne Baldwin is hunted down and killed by her colleagues. Reborn as a Djinn, she senses something sinister entering earth's atmosphere-something that makes tomorrow's forecast look deadly.

I was a member of the Weather Wardens. You probably aren’t personally acquainted with them, but they keep you from getting fried by lightning (mostly), swept away by floods (sometimes), killed by tornadoes (occasionally). We try to do all that stuff. Sometimes we even succeed.

Notes: What I said for "Ill Wind" still hold true but I liked better the first book notwithstanding.

#18
Title: Glass Houses (Morganville Vampire 01)
Author: Rachel Caine
Genre: Young adult, Paranormal
Summary:
(from B&N) Just don't stay out after dark.
College freshman Claire Danvers has had enough of her nightmarish dorm situation, where the popular girls never let her forget just where she ranks in the school's social scene: somewhere less than zero.
When Claire heads off-campus, the imposing old house where she finds a room may not be much better. Her new roommates don't show many signs of life. But they'll have Claire's back when the town's deepest secrets come crawling out, hungry for fresh blood.

She later remembered only one more thing, in the darkness: Monica’s voice, a low and vicious whisper. “Tonight. You’ll get what’s coming to you, you freak. I’m going to make sure.”

Other Quotes (mostly claire/shane shipping) :
“Yo!” Eve yelled (...) “Roomies! We’ve got a live one!” It occurred to Claire, as the door boomed shut behind her, that there were a couple of ways to interpret that, and one of them-the Texas Chainsaw Massacre way-wasn’t good. She stopped moving, frozen, and just looked around.

“God, you’re such a disappointment. Share, already!” Shane smiled tightly down at the eggs. “Hey, not in front of the kid. You got the note.” “Kid?” That hurt. Claire dropped plates on the counter with a little too much force. “Note?” Shane handed over a folded piece of paper. It was short and sweet, and signed “Michael”…and it told them that Claire was underage, and that the two of them were supposed to look out for her while she was in the house. Cute. Claire didn’t know whether to be pissed or flattered. On reflection…pissed. “I’m not a kid!”

“Shane!” He really was distracting. And he smelled good. Guy good, which was different from girl good-darker, spicier, a smell that made her go all fluttery inside. Oh, come on, it’s Shane! she told herself. That didn’t help, especially when he shot her that crooked smile and a look that probably would kill most girls at ten feet. He’s a slacker. And he’s-not that smart. Maybe he was, though. Just in different places than she was. It was a new idea to her, but she kind of liked it.

“Emergency room,” he said. She must have looked confused. “Damn, Claire. Warn a guy before you do a face-plant on the floor next time. I could have looked all heroic and caught you or something.”

“Claire. Wake up.” She blinked and realized that her head was on Shane’s shoulder, and Michael was nowhere to be seen. Her first thought was, Oh my God, am I drooling? Her second was that she hadn’t realized she was so close to him, snuggled in. Her third was that although Michael’s part of the couch was empty, Shane hadn’t moved away. And he was watching her with warm, friendly eyes. Oh. Oh, wow, that was nice.

He put his arms around her. Not the way Michael had, exactly-she didn’t know why it was different, but it was. This wasn’t a hug; it was-it felt-close. He wasn’t holding himself back, that was it. And she relaxed against him with a breathless sigh, cheek against his chest, almost purring with relief. He rested his chin on the top of her head. She felt so small next to him, but that was all right. It didn’t make her feel weak.“I’m going to miss you,” he whispered, and she leaned back to look up at him again. “Really?” “Yeah.”

Okay, this was kissing. Serious kissing. Not just a kiss before moving out, not a good-bye, this was Hello, sexy, and wow, she’d never even suspected that it could feel this way.

Shane looked…pale. Pale and shaken and-how predictable was this?-pissed.
Notes: Loved this! By the time I finished this book I had already the next one ready...It's really well-written and the characters grown on you from the start, you only have to choose who you like most. Personally I have a thing for Shane...

The Morganville Vampires It's surely one of my fav young adult vamp series!!!

Title: The Dead Girls' Dance (Morganville Vampire 02)
Author: Rachel Caine
Genre: Young adult, Paranormal
Summary:
(from B&N) Claire has her share of challenges. Like being a genius in a school that favors beauty over brains; homicidal girls in her dorm, and finding out that her college town is overrun with the living dead. On the up side, she has a new boyfriend with a vampire-hunting dad. But when a local fraternity throws the Dead Girls' Dance, hell is really going to break loose.

It didn’t happen, Claire told herself. It’s a bad dream, just another bad dream. You’ll wake up and it’ll be gone like fog….

Other Quotes (all Claire/shane...cause I'm sappy that way!):
“How about us?’” she heard herself ask. “Don’t we deserve a little fun?’” I did not just say that. Only she had.

She could have done a whole semester of kissing with Shane. Intense personal study. With lab classes.

It felt like being naked, except for all the clothes. The kisses this time were wet and urgent and deep, and the feeling of Shane’s muscles tensing and relaxing under her was incredibly exciting. This should be illegal, she thought. Well, it was kind of illegal. Or would be, if any clothes came off.

Want to play baseball?’” she asked. Shane’s eyes opened, and he stopped stroking her hair. “What?’” “First base,’” she said. “You’re already there.’” “I’m not running the bases.’” “Well, you could at least steal second.’” “Jeez, Claire. I used to distract myself with sports stats at times like these, but now you’ve gone and ruined it.’”
Notes: What I said for "Glass Houses"!

#20
Title: Fearless (Fearless 01)
Author: Francine Pascal
Genre: Young adult, Sci-fi
Summary:
(from B&N) Fearless introduces us to Gaia Moore, a girl born without the gene for fear. Gaia's mother was murdered, and her father, Tom Moore, a famous covert antiterrorist mastermind, is in hiding. Now 17 years old, Gaia is living in New York City with Tom's CIA friend, George, and his wife, Ella. Gaia is a prime target for terrorists and is in constant danger, but she is trained in all forms of combat so she can defend herself. Like Buffy and Xena, Gaia Moore is a force.
But she is also a high school student, trying to be like everyone else. As her friendships develop, we see that Gaia is in many ways a typical teen -- when she's not busy getting herself into and out of dangerous situations, righting wrongs, avenging hurts, and solving mysteries.
Anyway, you'd think because I'm fearless my life would be pretty great, right? Wrong. In fact, if I had three wishes, one of them would be to know fear. Because without fear, I'll never know if I'm truly brave. That wouldn't be my first wish, though-my first wish would be to have my dad back. For obvious reasons. My last wish . . . well that's kind of embarrassing. I'd like to end my unlucky seventeen-year stint as Gaia-the-Unkissed. Do I have anyone in mind? Yeah. But I'm beginning to think it'll never happen. . . .

Other Quotes:
He slowed down a bit more. "Gaia, how do you Know these things?" She shrugged. "I'm smart." "And modest, too." "Modesty is a waste of time," she pronounced. "I'll keep that in mind."

"It's so trendy, almost bleeding to death. All the cool girls are doing it.''
Notes: very Alias-ish....super strong & super smart girl who knows pretty much all the right moves to kill you in 3 seconds, an ex(?)-spy for a father and many mysteries to reveal...
I liked it! It's a quick read in a very long series and it's like watching an episode of a tv-show, with the same anticipation between a book and the next one.
My fav characters in the series?! Ed all the way!!!

Title: Anyone but You
Author: Lara M. Zeiss
Genre: Young adult
Summary:
(from B&N) Critter and Jesse have been close to Seattle since her dad moved in with their mother. Closer still since he took off six years ago and Layla decided to raise Sea as one of her own. It’s a decision none of them regrets, especially not Critter. He’s more than a brother-he’s Seattle’s best friend.
Now it’s vacation, and Seattle and Critter are stoop sitters, at least until summer school starts in July. It beats working like Jesse, or worse, studying like Layla wants them to. It’s too hot for Seattle to be on her skateboard-too hot, even, for Critter to be scamming on girls. But Sea comes up with a plan for them to bluff their way into the ritzy swimming pool the next town over. Big mistake.
Soon Critter’s got his heart set on a Penn Acres princess, while Seattle’s trying hard not to fall for a skater boy on the rebound. For the first time in a long while, they can talk to anyone but each other. Then Seattle’s dad shows up unexpectedly, and the way of life Critter and Seattle have always known begins to change even more. . . .
Seattle: I hated her the moment I laid eyes on her. She was everything I wasn’t: long legged, lithe, poised. Her smallish boobs formed two perfect little mounds in the top of her regulation blue Speedo one-piece, the bottom of which was concealed by an artfully tied flowerprint sarong.

Critter: The girl was fine. She was finer than fine-she was slamming, banging, busting, hott with-two-t’s supafine. I wasn’t sure which I liked more, the long honey hair or the long honey legs. Everything about her made me think of beach sand in the late afternoon, and man, I wanted to sink right in.

Other Quotes:
Critter: My sister had breasts. She’d always had them, I supposed. I just wasn’t sure when they’d gotten quite so big.(...)My sister was not supposed to have a great rack. At least, not one that I noticed.

Critter: I was fairly relieved when Sea took off on her own. She was wearing some two-sizes-too-small T-shirt, practically forcing my eyes to home in on “the girls,” and all I could think was I’m going to turn into a pillar of salt.

*Warning: Spoiler!!!*
.
.
.
.
.
Seattle: “Hey, rock star,” I whispered in Critter’s ear. “Love ya.” He nudged my shoulder gently. “Yeah,” he said, still smiling. “Me too.”
Notes: Like "Two Way Street" by Lauren Barnholdt the story is written switching from Seattle & Critter's, the two main characters, pov; I really like this style and I think it really suited the book!

*not very spoilerish but still...highlight to read...* The not quite love story between the Sea & Critter was very sweet and since they're not blood brothers it's all  for right to ship madly for those two...which I do!!! Wondeful story!

Title: Oh my Goth!
Author: Gena Showalter
Genre: Young adult, Sci-fi
Summary:
(from B&N) A fiercely individualist Goth girl wakes up to discover that the whole world has gone Goth and she's actually -- gag -- popular. Jade Leigh is a nonconformist who values individuality above all else. She has a small group of like-minded Goth friends who wear black, dabble in the dark arts, and thrive outside the norm. They're considered the "freaks" of their high school. But when Jade's smart mouth lands her in trouble -- again -- her principal decides to teach her a lesson she'll never forget.
Taken to a remote location where she is strapped down and sedated, Jade wakes up in an alternate universe where she rules the school. But her best friends won't talk to her, and the people she used to hate are all Goth. Only Clarik, the mysterious new boy in town, operates outside all the cliques. And only Mercedes, the Barbie clone Jade loathes, believes that Jade's stuck in a virtual reality game -- because she's stuck there, too, now living the life of a "freak." Together, they realize they might never get back to reality...and that even if they do, things might never be the same.
There are times I wish I were invisible. Which is silly, since I do everything I can to stand out.

Other Quotes:
I’m not a bad person. I haven’t killed anyone. I (rarely) lie. I don’t kick little puppies. So why do people look at me as if the world would be a better place without me?

There’s a really stupid saying: When life hands you a lemon, make lemonade. Well, I have a better saying: When life hands you a lemon, shove that lemon up its stupid butt.

What makes big boobs and perkiness so attractive to boys? I mean, really. Two round, mounds of fat and a fake smile. Yeah, winning attributes.

By lunch, my smile was brittle and my pretend happiness on the verge of total annihilation. Allow me to explain why.
Number of times I was asked for outfit advice: 9
Friends who hated me: 2
Number of times said friends flipped me off: 10
Number of times kicked out of front office: 14
Homicides slimly avoided: 671

How does fear become so powerful? We can’t see it. We can’t touch it, yet it gets its claws in us and begins to control us. Sigh. I hate feeling afraid, and I hate, hate, HATE feeling out of control.

“‘There are two kinds of people,’ she’d said. ‘Those who coast through life like ducks in a row, following one after the other, and those who ride the waves.’” Tears spilled down my cheeks, and my voice cracked. “‘Ride the waves, baby, and live. Live.’”

People are the most difficult thing in the world to change
Notes: Very enjoyable highschool-theme book with a sci-fi twist that spiced things up!

#23
Title: Blood & Chocolate
Author: Annette Curtis Klause
Genre: Young adult, Paranormal
Summary:
(from B&N) Vivian Gandillon relishes the change, the sweet, fierce ache that carries her from girl to wolf. At sixteen, she is beautiful and strong, and all the young wolves are on her tail. But Vivian still grieves for her dead father; her pack remains leaderless and in disarray, and she feels lost in the suburbs of Maryland. She longs for a normal life. But what is normal for a werewolf? Then Vivian falls in love with a human, a meat-boy. Aiden is kind and gentle, a welcome relief from the squabbling pack. He's fascinated by magic, and Vivian longs to reveal herself to him. Surely he would understand her and delight in the wonder of her dual nature, not fear her as an ordinary human would.
Vivian's divided loyalties are strained further when a brutal murder threatens to expose the pack. Moving between two worlds, she does not seem to belong in either. What is she really-human or beast? Which tastes sweeter-blood or chocolate?
Notes: Like I already said in some old reviews, I love reading about werevolves' packs dynamics. This book was full of them...so you can do the maths!!! Plus I always enjoy the bantering-type of love stories, and that's all I'm going to say...
