Book 2: Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf - 179 pages

Description from bookdepository.co.uk:
This is a love story.
A story about growing old with grace.

Addie Moore and Louis Waters have been neighbours for years. Now they both live alone, their houses empty of family, their quiet nights solitary. Then one evening Addie pays Louis a visit.

Their brave adventures form the beating heart of Our Souls at Night, Kent Haruf's exquisite final novel.

Thoughts:
My mum saw the movie version of this book, and loved it so much that she ran out to buy the book (which is highly unusual for mum), and then read it in one sitting (not unusual for my mum). She insisted I read it after she was done, though she spoiled the ending, so I knew what was coming through out. It's a lovely story about a much ignored demographic, older, widowed people who aren't yet ready to give up on life. Addie and Louis are neighbours who start sleeping together - just sleeping and talking in the night, combating their loneliness. Addie's son Gene leaves his son Jamie with Addie for the summer, and he develops a wonderful relationship with both Addie and Louis. But when Gene finds out about the relationship, he is less than impressed. Gene is a horrible person, who treats his mother like she's already dead, and assumes Louis is only after Addie's money. He's also a terrible father, who completely ignores what a wonderful impact Louis has on Jamie. Haruf perfectly captures an older couple just trying to enjoy their twilight years, and more sadly, how loss can really screw up people. A quick, beautiful but sad read.
