Nocturnes by John Connolly

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was a collection of horror/thriller short stories and novellas that were written in styles that put me in mind of Edgar Allen Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, Daphne duMaurier and Stephen King, because of their gothic style.

I mainly read this for the second novella, "The Reflecting Eye", which revolved around the recurring character Charlie Parker. The plot revolved around a missing girl and the house that belonged to a paedophile who committed suicide. I noticed that the supernatural elements seemed to have been ramped up slightly in this one, with some very creepy moments involving mirrors. The story also introduced a character known as "The Collector" who I am assuming resurfaces in later Charlie Parker novels (I have the next one, "The Black Angel" to read hopefully soon).

I loved reading all of the stories, and while with some of them it was easy to tell how they would end (a story involving clowns that touches upon a lot of childhood fears) there were some that went for surprising plot twists. A story involving a train journey gave a new meaning to the phrase "that time of the month".

I also noticed that John Connolly has written a follow-up to Nocturnes, which I will probably read at some point.
