Book 37: The Sandman: Volume 3 - Dream Country by Neil Gaiman - 160 pages

Description from bookdepository.co.uk:
The third book of the Sandman collection is a series of four short comic book stories. In each of these otherwise unrelated stories, Morpheus serves only as a minor character. Here we meet the mother of Morpheus s son, find out what cats dream about, and discover the true origin behind Shakespeare s A Midsummer s Night Dream. The latter won a World Fantasy Award for best short story, the first time a comic book was given that honor. Collects THE SANDMAN #17-20.

Thoughts:
The third Sandman comic is a sort of interlude, featuring four stand alone dream related stories. I think I actually enjoyed this volume best, as each story is quite clever, and I enjoyed the self contained nature. This volume also features Gaiman's script (including notes from both Gaiman and the artist) for one featured story, Calliope, which provides some insight into how Gaiman creates his comic. Of the four stories, I think I like 'Dream of a Thousand Cats' best, which tells the story of a world where cats ruled and were human sized, while humans were their play things. I'm still not sure I see why Sandman is considered so revolutionary in the comic book world, but I wonder if that's because this comic came out in 1991, and I've simply grown up in a story telling landscape post Sandman's influence...worth pondering.
