May 2016 reading:
9. Déjà Dead, by Kathy Reichs (411 pages)
Temperence Brennen is a forensic anthropologist in Montreal, having moved there after her marriage ended. When she is sent to recover what turns out to be a murder victim, and realizes it's a serial murderer, she has no idea that she, and everything she cares about, could become a target. Different from the show Bones in a lot of ways; I'd say Bones is an AU of the books.
10. Inked, by Karen Chance, Marjorie M. Liu, Yasmine Galenorn, and Eileen Wilks (437 pages)
I mostly read this for the Liu story, but I also enjoyed the Wilks and Chance stories and will likely look into more of them at some point. The one weakness for me was Galenorn, but it's personal preference. I'm not interested in stories where the sex/attraction aspect overshadows the plot. Overall, I'm glad this introduced me to other writers.
11. Death Du Jour, by Kathy Reichs (451 pages)
This book felt a little disorganized and the story didn't quite come together for me. Certain things fell apart, and there were pieces that weren't resolved. I will probably give the third book a chance. It's clear Reichs does her research. It might just be that mysteries really aren't my thing.
12. Wild Thing, by Maggie Shayne, Marjorie M. Liu, Alyssa Day, and Meljean Brook (394 pages)
I read this for the Hunter Kiss story, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The others had interesting premises, but I'm honestly not a fan of paranormal romance, since sometimes the romance/sex/attraction aspect takes over the story and obscures the plot. Sometimes the attraction/love/mating thing felt forced, too. Personal preference, but I prefer urban fantasy.
13. Deadly Decisions, by Kathy Reichs (333 pages)
This was better than the last book. I feel like the books conclude very quickly, and things don't really fit together completely. Maybe there's a larger design, but it's not clear yet. I'm not completely invested in the series, and Brennan and some of the people close to her strike me as especially consistent in lacking common sense, but I'm interested in Detective Ryan.
14. Pocket Apocalypse, by Seanan McGuire (352 pages)
When Shelby asks Alex for help because Australia is facing a never-before-seen werewolf outbreak, Alex overcomes his fear to help her and her family, travelling to the Down Under to help them. Unfortunately, it seems data about werewolves is incomplete, and he might not survive long enough to complete it. Fun read.
15. Fatal Voyage, by Kathy Reichs (363 pages)
Working at the scene of a devastating airplane crash, Brennan discovers a foot that doesn't belong and finds herself in a minefield--one that may cost her career. Powerful people have secrets connected to that foot, and they'll do anything to keep them. I enjoyed this one a lot more than the others.
