Book #9 brought me to Ohio, the real-life account of Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus in
Hope:
In 2013, news reports were going wild with a story that Amanda Berry, a girl missing for 10 years, was found alive after having broken out of her captor's home. Inside the home were two other missing girls, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight. Amanda and Gina wrote this book together; Michelle has written her own which I have not read.
This book is the real-version of the novel Room. Amanda has a child while in captivity with Ariel Castro, the man who kidnapped her, Gina, and Michelle - while hiding their presence and his new daughter's presence from his family and neighbors.
It's terrifying how someone who could appear so normal on the outside could have such awful secrets - secrets of chained girls in the locked bedrooms of his house.
But it's also inspiring how human strength can transcend even amongst the darkest of the dark and into some of the worst situations imaginable.
