Poul Anderson has written a lot of very good science fiction and fantasy; long ago I read his books Operation Chaos and Operation Luna about the adventures of a werewolf and witch who were part of the US armed forces in a parallel world where magic, and magical beasts, existed. Some time ago, I found a short story about them when they first met, called Operation Afreet, and in keeping with Halloween I read it yesterday. Set in what might have been the parallel world's WWII, the protagonist werewolf is assigned to eliminate the threat of a Djinn on the opposing side along with Virginia, the witch. This, too, is a fun read as were the two novels and I'd recommend them all.
