Book 4: Frankenstein, Mary Shelley

Summary: It's Frankenstein - the story is probably familiar to most. A Swiss scientist discovers the secret to creating life from death & is haunted by the consequences of his creation. I've actually read this before, years ago, but it was really fun to return to it & to notice different aspects of the story. This time, I couldn't help remarking on the themes of justice that echo throughout the work - the most obvious being the revenge that the creation & Frankenstein wish upon each other. However, there are also countless trial & court scenes throughout the book. I was also struck by the sublimity of the nature descriptions throughout the tale. Mary Shelley is certainly a vivid writer! Even when the story is so familiar that it no longer holds the reader in suspense, the book is still an entertaining & thought-provoking read.
