Appointment at the Edge of Forever by
Perrin Pring My rating:
3 of 5 stars I won this as a goodreads giveaway which did not influence my review. I enjoyed this first book in the series. It's SF with a bit of magic realism mixed in. There was a bit of info dumping in the beginning but not bad. Filion is a Lossal, a non-human, sort of like a seven foot tall bipedal dog-man. He's also a Searcher, able to enter people's dreams and he's very good at it. He's been influencing important people for some time now but he gets a summons from a stranger dreamer, Ryo. This summons changes his life. Filion is brought together with Didrik, a living document and they need to save Ryo. Filion leaves everything behind, breaks protocol, to save Ryo who we learn is a Chozen and without going into it too deeply she's basically a god-like woman who doesn't know she is. Every time a Chozen is reborn they lose memories and they were made by even more powerful god-like creatures to fix the errors of their ways but a chism occurred in this group and part of them love the power they have over others and don't want the Chozen to change this and have hunted them all, but Ryo, to extinction.
Ryo, in the meantime, fights to save her life but her role is a bit smaller than Ryo's. There is also Yalki, one of the powerful entities that wants Ryo dead. In the meantime Filion has to find his way to her. He teams up with Captain Eri and her team, Wiq, a cyborg and Red, baseline human as is Eri.
Overall the characters are enjoyable though I would have liked a bit more character development for some of them, Eri especially. Wiq is well done. I liked her a lot. I was less of a fan of how the chapters were done, most often each scene change a new chapter so there were tons of one page chapters but that's a minor thing. Also not to spoil the end but let's just say it ends on a cliffhanger which personally isn't my thing. I like more self contained books but still, I went into it knowing it was a series. It's was fun.
