February 2014 reading:

3. Steam-Powered: Lesbian Steampunk Stories, edited by Joselle Vanderhooft (376 pages)
I enjoyed most of the stories. Like with Vanderhooft's Sleeping Beauty, Indeed anthology, the stories have a sort of ethereal quality to them, and are different from what I've found most lesbian fiction to be. Rather than an overabundance of sex, these stories are elegant and filled with plot and character. Definitely a good read.

4. Utopia, by Thomas More (110 pages)
I enjoyed this read quite a bit. There were many sections that resonated with me philosophically, fitting with my views and articulating them well. The one section I wasn't all that fond of was the part about religion and the dismissal of atheism as a viable belief, with the implication that it is damaging to society. I rather disagreed with that and some of the unavoidable sexism which comes with older texts--though I do recognize that could have been worse. Overall enjoyable.

5. The Hunt for Elsewhere, by Beatrice Vine (273 pages)
I found this quite enjoyable, with engaging characters and a clear plot. The journey taken is very much a bildungsroman--at least the second part, with Saxton and Dante. I loved the discussions of family and friendship, and honor and justice.

6. The Remains, by Laura Spence-Ash (22 pages)
Issue 188 of One Story. Beautifully written. Loved the imagery and the story of this woman, slowly coming out through the people who knew her--starting with those who did not, and moving toward the more familiar.
