Black Butler, Vol. 10 by Yana Toboso

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The tenth volume picks up the locked room murder mystery that claimed Sebastian’s life last volume. I had so much fun with this. First, it’s a mystery. Second, it’s feature Arthur Conan Doyle as a young man and third, we get to see Sherlock forming in Doyle’s head. We know Ciel is in trouble with Doyle, whom he barely knows and Lau (who never stops smoking opium in this whole volume) are the voices of reason and wisdom in this.

However, what I really liked, especially of the first half, is not how they were working through the mystery, and Ciel’s guests getting more and more pissed, it was how Tanaka, Finny, Mey-Rin and Baldo get to shine now that they’re out of Sebastian’s shadow. Baldo puts it very succinctly, they owe everything (well Tanaka wasn’t included in this) to Ciel and Sebastian. He, Finny and Mey-Rin were nothing but killers until now. And it was amazing to see Tanaka step out of the old man role to whip some butt.

Halfway through a local vicar comes to the rescue and helps them solve the mystery with his keen sense of observations. His name? Jeremy Rathbone, a nod to the two men most noted for playing Sherlock Holmes (I appreciated that). Jeremy along with Doyle and the others quickly work the mystery to a conclusion.

This was fun and the art is just incredible. There is one splash page where most of the cast is in Sherlock’s trademark clothing. It is so cute
