Books 24-54 - Done!

Dec 11, 2009 22:00

I know I've read over 50 books this year, so I want to get them all up here so I can start a new year. I'm hoping to read more regular books this year, not just manga. I definitely have a lot on my 'To Read' list because of GoodReads! =)

Book 24:
7 Jikanme Rhapsody by Tanaka Meca
~ manga, romance, 158 pages, rating 5/5

Summary: Toudou Rinko is a serious and reliable class representative, now in 2nd year of high school. It happens that the first male person she starts to notice is her homeroom teacher, Saku Makoto. She ends up helping the nonchanlant and playful teacher with his "Love Guidance Room". - MangaUpdates

Thoughts: Love the art, the characters are so cute (especially Rinko). This is probably the sweetest teacher-student relationship I’ve ever read. I didn’t read the Extra chapter (which is a separate oneshot story).

Books 25-29:

One Piece volumes 36-39 by Eiichirou Oda
~ manga, action/adventure, 751 pages, rating 5/5

Summaries:
Volume 36 Summary: The Straw Hats are on the run and Robin is nowhere to be found. In order to determine where her allegiances lie, the Straw Hats decide to break into Galley-La's headquarters to find her. - Wikipedia
Volume 37 Summary: The Straw Hats arrive on the scene and find Robin with CP9. Although she claims to want nothing more to do with them, Luffy and company attack CP9 so that they can have a chance to talk to her. - Wikipedia
Volume 38 Summary (spoiler): After the Straw Hats recover from their injuries they discover that Robin has sided with the government in order to save the rest of the crew from destruction. - Wikipedia
Volume 39 Summary: As they move through the train looking for Robin, Sanji, Usopp, and Franky deal with the lesser members of Cipher Pol. - Wikipedia
Volume 40 Summary (spoiler): The Straw Hats lay waste to Enies Lobby, defeating anyone that tries to keep them from Robin. - Wikipedia

Thoughts: Probably some of my most favorite volumes. Lots of Franky, Robin, Galley-La, CP9, Mugiwara… Also has some really awesome illustrations. Also tells Franky’s story, and it’s the saddest of them all, seriously.

Books 30-31:

Detective Conan volumes 15-16 by Goushou Aoyama
~ manga, mystery, murder mystery

Summaries:
Volume 15 (spoiler): During a school field trip, Conan and Rachel end up in a mountain cabin with several members of the teaching staff. Conan gets quite a surprise when he answers the doorbell and a frozen teacher's corpse falls into the house! - Wikipedia
Volume 16: Conan meets his trickiest adversary yet when the Sebastian Financial Group hosts an exclusive party on the lavish ocean liner the Q. - Wikipedia

Thoughts: I always enjoy the cases, so it's safe to say I loved these volumes. In volume 16 we meet Kaito KID. Loved that!

Book 32:

9th Sleep by Tateno Makoto
~ manga, lgbt

Summary: The planet had died once before... On the day of Despaira, a god appeared in the sky and saved the world; his name was King Shishioh. But now with the throne of the king empty, a vicious battle between two brothers is unfolding. Who will ascend the throne? - MangaUpdates

Thoughts: Been a while since I read this, but I remember it vividly and love the story. I will probably reread this soon again this year.

Book 33:

A Cruel God by Shouya Toko & Takano Youko
~ manga, lgbt

Summary: Kei is interested in a woman at the gym. Imagine her surprise when she sees her in a lesbian bar! - MangaUpdates

Thoughts: Don't remember much except it's unrequited, but interesting.

Book 34:

A Little Melody of Love by Uchimura Kaname
~ manga, lgbt

Summary: "A Little Melody of Love" is a short story about two girls who are very different, who both seem to have feelings for one another. (from Lililicious) - MangaUpdates

Thoughts: Don't remember this one.

Book 35-36:

Detective Conan volumes 17-18 by Goushou Aoyama
~ manga, mystery, murder mystery

Summaries:
Volume 17: A mysterious letter brings Conan and his friends to a mansion full of beautiful clocks that aren't quite behaving themselves. As Conan attempts to figure out what's wrong with the timepieces and who wrote the letter, he uncovers a tale of treasure, thieves and a family tree with very twisted branches. Plus, a famous actor's wife meets with an unfortunate accident right in front of Conan, who takes on the mission to find out about her sudden demise.
Volume 18: At a mystery-themed college party, a fire threatens the life of a pretty freshman--and Conan suspects arson. But Ran is more worried by the discovery that the victim has a past with Kudou Shinichi. Can she compete with Jimmy's beautiful, brilliant first love? Then the Junior Detective League stumbles upon a counterfeiting operation led by a woman in black, and Conan finds himself on the trail of the shadowy crime syndicate that turned him into a kid--not to mention the scientist. Miyano Shiho who created the de-aging formula!

When he joins the high school basketball team, everyone is surprised to find out that he is small, weak, and easy to miss. What is the secret that makes him so strong, and how will he help his high school team?

Thoughts: LOVE this manga! Can't wait until there's more.

Book 49:

Teiou no Amai Wana by Shimada Hisami
~ manga, lgbt

Summary: Mano Chiaki is simple-minded, incompetent and clumsy as well, so after eight unsuccessful interviews he's grateful he found a job working with genius architect Murasame. Even if Murasame is a bully and seems to enjoy torturing Mano, he's determined not to give up! - MangaUpdate

Thoughts: Interesting story. I normally don't like bully seme, but I ended up liking this story/their relationship by the end. Also, the uke does have some backbone.

~ manga, comedy, fantasy, school life

~ manga, comedy, fantasy, school life

Summary: Sitting by himself in the back of the class, 10th-grader Yugi always had his head in some game--until he solved the Millennium Puzzle, an Egyptian artifact containing the spirit of a master gambler from the age of the pharoahs! Awakened after three thousand years, the King of Games possesses Yugi, recklessly challenging bullies and evil-doers to the Shadow Games, where the stakes are high, and even the most ordinary betmay result in weirdness and danger beyond belief! Let the games...begin! [MangaUpdates]

Thoughts: I really enjoy reading this manga. The art isn't always the best, but it grows on you. I like the story, even the bizarre and sometimes grim ideas. =)

Book 54:

To Find and to Keep by Serena Yates
~ lgbt, rating 4/5

Summary: Four years ago Ryan's parents disowned him for being gay. To escape their threats, he ran away to Canada. Now his twin sister Nicole is getting married to his best friend Peter, and Ryan will risk anything to attend. Help arrives in the most unexpected form: Peter's older brother Daniel, the man Ryan had loved from afar. - Goodreads

Thoughts: Interesting idea for the character Ryan. I definitely liked that, plus his sister and Peter. I do think the relationship between Daniel and Ryan was a bit over-the-top. It was like trying to fit a longer relationship into just two days, especially with the use of endearments escalating like that. I definitely recommend this to people looking for a fluffy short story (with a smidge of angst/plot) to read to cheer them up. =)

Yay! I'm done. I started June 2009 and ended December 2009. I had until May 2010, so I finished early. I thought about trying for 100 but I wanna start out new.
