Book #32 -- Elizabeth Bear, Seven for a Secret, 128 pages.
Vampires and werewolves and sorceresses, oh my! In an alternate universe 1938 the Prussian Empire has taken over Europe and are dabbling at things best unknown to man, attempting to create an elite fighting force of werewolves out of England's seventh daughters. It's up to wampyr Sabastien, who has faced werewolves before and has no desire to do so again, and the elderly, but still brilliant, sorceress Abby Irene Garrett, to stop them. Despite the rather cheesy summary, this is a truly brilliant book, and my one complaint is that it seems too compressed. It ends rather abruptly, like the author decided she didn't really want to do a long novel after all and forced the ending to keep it short. We are left somewhat in the dark on the ultimate fate of the main characters and the world, and I really want to know what happens. Maybe if I'm really lucky, our dear
matociquala will consider a sequel!
