Takashi doesn’t know how to waltz, but Mitsukuni does. Back then, they were only cousins, and Mitsukuni was not a quarter of his size-he was, actually, almost the same size as Takashi; that is to say, small for his age.
He makes Takashi be the girl, because he doesn’t know how to follow. And he smiles the entire time, English accented sharply: “Ku-i-k’! Ku-i-k’! Su-ro!”
Their older cousins laugh at them, smile and shake their heads. At least, the Morinozuka cousins do; Mitsukuni’s Haninozuka cousins just frown and shake their heads and mutter under their breaths about how Takashi should be leading even if he doesn’t know how; Mitsukuni is the one who will always be mistaken for the girl, after all.
It takes weeks of Mitsukuni’s accented ‘kuik’-kuik’-suro!’ before they get anywhere.
Takashi still smiles when all Mitsukuni wants is to teach him to dance better.
