Background: Born in Florence, Italy during the Renaissance period, Stefan Salvatore was born to Giuseppe, Conte di Salvatore. He had an elder brother named Damon.
When Stefan was 17, a young German woman by the name of Katherine von Swartzchild came to live with his family. She and her nurse stayed with them: Katherine was very sick and was to remain there until she recovered. Stefan became entranced with her and fell in love.
Katherine wasn't sick, but rather she was a vampire. She had been changed quite some time prior to her living in the Salvatore residence. During her stay there, Damon returned home and he too began to fall in love with her.
One night, she separately exchanged blood with both boys. Katherine convinced both of the boys that she loved them and wanted them as her lover always. Later that night, Stefan and Damon realized they had been tricked: Katherine approached them both with a ring (like she had worn, with a lapis lazuli stone in it, which allows vampires to walk in the sun) and told them that she wanted the three of them to live together forever.
Damon and Stefan had never gotten along, and they both became angry quickly. Both boys wanted Katherine desperately. When Katherine realized that they were still going to argue with one another, she set up a trap for them. She had her maid, Gudren, lead them to believe that she was in a garden on the grounds. Both boys went, but they found a pile of ashes and Katherine's ring laying on a rock. Thinking she was dead, the boys turned on each other in sword combat. With vampire blood in their systems, both turned into vampires after they had stabbed and killed one another.
Over his years of existence, Stefan chose to only feed on the blood of animals. He was rarely violent with humans or otherwise unless absolutely necessary. He eventually left Florence.
In 1991, Stefan went to a town called Fell's Church. There, he came across a teenage girl who looked exactly like Katherine. He was fairly captivated with her, though didn't rush into a relationship.
This girl, Elena Gilbert, did everything in her power to make Stefan her boyfriend. He gave into her eventually and shared his secret of being a vampire.
Damon also showed up after some time, much to Stefan's dismay. He didn't trust his brother whatsoever and blamed him for various killings and other problems that were going on in the town.
While living in Fell's Church, Stefan and Elena (and other people in the town, including Elena's friends and family) were tormented by some mysterious, very strong power.
After several months, Elena was chased down and killed. As she had shared blood with Stefan and Damon (the first willingly, the second had played various mind-tricks on her) soon before this attack, she turned into a vampire. While Elena's heart warred over the idea of being loyal to both Stefan and Damon, Stefan eventually won. She was kept secret by the brothers for awhile, as everyone in the town thought she was dead. Elena reveals herself to her two best friends, Bonnie and Meredith, after her funeral service.
After some time, Stefan, Damon, and Elena were all caught by the force that had been tormenting them. It had been Katherine, who had faked her death to try to get Stefan and Damon to love each other like brothers should. When her plan had failed, she ran and fled to the man who had turned her into a vampire.
Katherine tortured the three of them but in a moment of will and precision, Elena pushed her into sunlight and killed her. Unfortunately, Elena had been hurt in the light as well. She passed away after Stefan promised her he'd always be there for Damon, that they'd protect one another.
After Elena's death, Stefan and Damon both returned to Italy. Both brothers still had the same sort of personalities as always, and therefore they continued to not get along very well. Stefan refused to break his promise to Elena, though. The two returned to Fell's Church some time later when Elena's best friends summoned them through magic. Another force had struck the small town.
They eventually found this new force to be the vampire that had turned Katherine. His name was Klaus, one of the "Old Ones," an original vampire. He was ridiculously powerful and wanted Stefan and Damon dead.
In a final showdown, Stefan was left dying on the ground in a field while Bonnie had herself thrown over Stefan's body so that Klaus would have had to kill them both. In a final moment of despair, Bonnie screamed Elena's name.
Bonnie, a druid (who possessed various magical abilities), had spoken with Elena's spirit in dreams and through channeling. Elena's spirit had been the one to warn Bonnie of the danger, and Elena had been tormented by Klaus in the spiritual realm.
Upon Bonnie's scream, Elena along with many other ghosts that had died in the area during the Civil War, rose up and took Klaus away to a place where he could no longer do harm.
Elena then healed all of her hurt friends, as well as Stefan and Damon. Once she had used all of her power, she was pulled back toward whatever realm of existence she was bound for. Bonnie and Stefan were both openly heartbroken as she faded away.
Stefan will come into the village at this point, as he's screaming her name out.
Personality: Stefan was a very good son. He planned to go down the same path of life as his father, including a career in politics. Throughout his human years, he was very behaved (and is thus a foil to his brother Damon, who seemed to go out of his way to be rambunctious.)
The Salvatores were a family of a certain prestige. They were very well off and educated. As such, Stefan is well read and intelligent. He has virtually no wild side and has excellent manners. In essence, he truly is a gentleman.
Stefan has been very much the pacifist through his life, unless the need for vengeance or violence has arose. He has killed and drank human blood but has always been at great odds with the vampire part of himself. Since he feeds only on animal blood, he is physically weaker and his powers aren't as strong as they could be. This only has an effect on Stefan when he needs to be strong; otherwise, it doesn't greatly distress him that he's not as strong as he could be.
A good deal of the time, Stefan comes off as unemotional and subdued. This is highly due to the fact that he's dating Elena (someone who wants him to be more like her, more wild and outgoing) but he truly does have a very toned down way of speaking and presenting himself.
Even with keeping Elena's promise of being a good brother and standing beside Damon always, Stefan has always had a hard time believing or accepting that his brother can be truthful and good.
Physical Description: Stefan is of average height, has green eyes and wavy, black hair. He dresses in an expensive, refined manner, a trait brought out by his upbringing. He has been noted to have a handsomely sculpted face.
Does your pup have any special powers/abilities/gifts that we should be aware of? (i.e. super healing, telepathic etc) Yes, he's a vampire. He is over 500 years old.
Stefan does not feed on humans, nor does he had any desire to. Since he feeds only on the blood of animals, he's weaker than other vampires. As such, his powers are limited. If he were to drink human blood, all of the below powers would be stronger.
He has enhanced strength and speed. His human senses are also heightened. He can heal wounds that are afflicted upon himself very quickly.
He is able to influence humans to do anything he says with mind compulsion (also called mental manipulation or persuasion.) With compulsion, a vampire can look into the eyes of a person and literally make them do anything that the vampire chooses. This is done with the words the vampire speaks, and their mental powers. Also, he has telepathic abilities.
He can turn into a crow or hawk when he is strong.
While he has all of these powers, Stefan is not prone to violence.
What brings your character to the village? What does he need to learn/achieve, etc? Stefan has loathed the creature he came to be so early in this life for over 500 years. While this isn't something that will easily fade, perhaps he can find a semblance of peace in the village. He truly is not as bad as so many types of vampires out there, even compared to his own brother. While he may not come to terms with himself, the village is a place with so many other types of vampires, people, and opinions, that he can surely come a lot closer to doing so.
Stefan's presence in the village would be helpful for the other characters from the canon as well. Truly, Elena and Stefan, and Damon and Stefan, mesh together in certain ways in the books and it's an aspect that would be helpful for character development in the village too.
Why do you want to play this character? Truthfully, I love The Vampire Diaries. I want to play Stefan because I would absolutely adore interacting with the current Damon that we have in the village, as well as the other cast-mates. I like that he's one of the good guys of the whole story, but even so, he has the ability to be something different. While it would take a good deal for him to verge off on another path then one he's followed for so long, it would be interesting to explore. There are several type of vampires in the village that he could learn about and get to know too.
