Even though Ed and Al were hardly ever came home, Winry knew that when they did not come come back after the battle in Central, they were never coming home again. Everyone else seemed to know as well, and the Brothers were not easily forgotten.
"It's so quiet here without those boys," Said one of her patients.
Winry shook her head, "All their noise gave me a head ache,"
The quiet was the loudest where Ed and Al's house once stood. At first She walked by it without thinking about it. Then She started going out of her way to avoid it.
When someone asked her about it, She said "I just felt like being different,"
She went to visit Rush Valley, where she and Ed had fought, and made up. She said She did not think about that or the chase She sent Him on to get his precious watch back.
"You must bot be getting as much money with your biggest customer gone!" Paninya joked.
Winry laughed, "It was annoying to have to nag Ed about his automail so much!"
She stayed for awhile, learning more about automail. Eventually her teacher let her go, and She went to work at the hospital in East City. She learned that the two brothers spent more time there than She knew about. All the nurses told her stories about them, how all the little kids would climb on Al and Ed would find creative ways to get rid of his Milk.
"You poor girl, you must miss them so much," One nurse said sympathetically. Focusing on a casing She was working on, Winry simply said that she was relieved she did not have to worry about them all the time.
Eventually, some of Ed's military friends came around. They all gushed at how much She had grown up. They laughed and joked, and Winry was happy.
"It's hard to get a good chick around her, Fullmetal really is an idiot for leaving you behind," Havoc joked.
"His loss!" Winry laughed.
Riza visited her seperatley. They got coffee at a local cafe, chattering away. Riza did not bring up Ed or Al at all. Winry also tried not to bring up the Colonel, knowing things were still tense between the two. Winry could tell that Riza missed him, even though She did not mention it.
Visitors from Xing came to the hospital. Ling Yao, a prince, was seeking automail for one of his two guards, a girl named Lan Fan. Ling and Winry were the same age, so some of the nurses tried to convince Winy to flirt with him, but She could tell He was very close to Lan Fan, although He seemed oblivious to it himself. He stayed with Lan Fan as long as he could, often having to be chased out after visiting hours ended.
Winry let him and his other guard, Fu, stay at her apartment. Ling noticed the picture on her table.
"That's Al, isn't it?"
She blinked, "You know Al?"
"Yes, he came to Xing to study Alkehestry, He thought it would help him find his brother. It that him with Al in the picture?"
"Yes, that's Ed," Winry said, picking up the picture and smiling fondly.
"Where are they now?" Ling inquired.
"They're," She paused, "Very far away,"
"Do you miss them?"
Winry laughed. "Not really, all they did was make me worry,"
Ling looked at Her.
"What?" She asked.
"To survive in my country, you learn to tell when people lie,"
It was Winry's turn to stare. The silence seemed to stretch on forever. Finally She muttered something about needing to get something from the store, grabbed her bag, and left.
She was angry as She walked, but not because he accused her of lying
Because after She fooled so many people that knew her so well, a total stranger had called her bluff.
Every time someone asked about them, She had to lie. She missed their noise, She missed how Ed was so reckless with the automail She worked so hard on, She missed Ed hating his Milk, She missed little kids think Al was a play thing, and the only reason She avoided where their house had been was because it hurt too much.
She missed them, but she was mad at them too. She hated lying, and it hurt.
Above all else, She did not want to find out if the truth would hurt less.
