The hunters had just returned with a pig and the sun was nearly down. Maurice sat on a log by the fire and tried to make himself invisible as possible. He absentmindedly traced the bruises along his chest and stared into the blazing fire. This is what he got for wanting things the way they were before. Before they had landed on the island, Roger was angry and spiteful, sure, but he wouldn’t hurt anyone. Not like this.
He thought he could change the savage Roger’d become. Back at school Maurice was the closest thing Roger had to a friend, and he thought that still meant something.
“Don’t want to join in? Everyone else is having fun in their dance.”
He recognized that deep, rich voice anywhere. He looked down and stared at the sand, hoping he’d just leave. It was unlikely, but he thought he’d try.
“Hey, look at me. I’m talking to you.”
The voice grew softer, and sent a chill down Maurice’s back. He took a deep breath and barely lifted his head to face the boy who seemed to constantly fill his thoughts lately. Said boy grabbed his jaw and forced it up higher before smirking in satisfaction.
“Obedient as always. You looked like you were thinking about something pretty hard there..still think a savage like me is worth saving? You can’t even look me in the eye.”
“Because you’re not my Roger. You are a savage, an awful, mean, horrible savage. And you stole him from me.” He could feel tears pricking at his eyes. He wished he could just shut up, but he knew that once he got upset, he just kept going. “And one day, even if you have to beat me to death, you’re going to give him back to me. Because he’s too strong to be taken away. And…” He swallowed. He could be wrong about this, and if he was, then this could all be for nothing. All these bruises and tearful nights could’ve meant nothing. “And Roger cares about me too much to let some island get to him like this.”
Roger let out a chuckle. “Is that what you think? I haven’t changed, you know. This island has finally just let me be who I am. That’s the great thing about no rules, you -“
Suddenly Maurice pressed his lips to Roger’s. He pulled back a little and looked him straight in the eye. “Just shut up Roger. You know I’m right.” His hands were shaking and his heart was pounding and he hoped to God that Roger didn’t notice that little fact. The two boys stared each other down until Roger’s eyes softened and his whole body seemed to relax. Maurice’s lips curled up into a small smile. Roger gently took his hand and dragged him a little ways into the woods.
Maurice decided to keep quiet for now; he felt anything he said right now would ruin this moment. He knew he was acting like a lovesick puppy over a murderer, but at this point, he didn’t care. Roger was his, and he was being gentle just to him for just a while.
Suddenly Roger stopped and turned to face him. “Do you love me?” he asked.
Startled, Maurice paused for a moment and then replied, “Yes, I love you. You know I do.”
The next thing he knew, there was a knife stuck in his chest and Roger was looking at him with those bloodthirsty, steely eyes.
“Rog…”
Maurice’s eyes were swimming, his chest was throbbing, and his blood was soaking what was left of the dirty rags he was wearing. He thought he saw Roger grab the knife again and felt it forcefully tear down his torso, leaving behind what must be a deep gash about half a foot long. He took a shaky step back and he knees collapsed. As hit head hit the ground, he lost consciousness.
Roger stared down at the boy’s corpse. He gripped the knife and worked it out of the body.
“ I had hope, you know. I thought you of all people could still accept me. But you can’t even look me in the eye. Not really.”
