Tony Parsons - The Family Way

A woman’s biological destiny is to have a baby. A man’s biological destiny is to plant his seed in as many women as he can.

The last thing a man wanted to hear about on the third date was how much the woman wanted a husband and a baby. It would turn off any man.

Arrange your life so that you can’t tell the differences between work and pleasure.

The trouble is as women get older, the pool of potential partners gets smaller. But for men, it gets bigger.

It wasn’t that Megan couldn’t find a better man than Will. It was that she would never again have all that time to waste.

Men didn’t expect virginity these days, but they certainly expected the illusion of purity. The truth? They can’t handle the truth!

Desire makes everything blossom; possession makes everything wither and fade.

If you want to fuck them, then you don’t want a baby with them. And if you want a baby with them, then you don’t want to fuck them.

You could never explain that feeling, but you couldn’t mistake it for anything else. He thought of it as love.

A baby is something with big mouth at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other.

He had been truly in love with her but as much as he missed her, he knew that he could live without her. That was the worst thing about growing older. That was the worst thing of all. Realizing that you could keep living without anyone, when it came to the crunch, when it came to goodbye and good luck, take care of yourself and let’s be friends, realizing that we are all ultimately alone, taking our pleasure where we can.

Once you have used up your store of love, you can live without anyone.

That was the trouble with children - you couldn’t just dress them up and look at them. They kept wanting things from you.

Once upon a time a woman had a baby with the first man she met. But these days she was more likely to have a baby with the last man she met.

You couldn’t tell the woman you loved that you weren’t sure you wanted a child with her.

When you had a child, it changed everything. You couldn’t worry about the rest of the human race. You had to be selfish, you had to think about your baby, and find a place that was safe for your own flesh and blood.
As soon as you became a mother or father, then everything was about the next generation. The new family.

There’s no point in crying if you’re not loved. Because nobody comes.

There’s nobody more alone than someone who is alone with a baby.
