It's International Recommend-A-Movie Day, according to ludditerobot (and he's never steered me wrong yet). Well, The Lord of the Rings goes without saying. [Edited because I missed the part where you are supposed to reccommend little-known films. Sheesh, I have no attention to detail anymore!]
So, in no particular order: (cut for FList friendliness)
The Fog of War, a documentary about Robert S. McNamara. I've never bought a documentary for my personal collection before, but I did so I could force encourage people to watch it.
Henry V, and just about anything directed by Kenneth Brannagh (except Frankenstein). This is the first movie I ever bought for myself - and that was before affordable home videos were even a concept. Yeah, I paid $90 for it - I've watched it enough times to make it worth it, though.
84 Charing Cross Road, starring Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins. Very faithful adaptation of the book, even though the studio tried to market it as a romance. Deep friendship yes, but not a romance - unless you count both characters love affairs with books.
The Black Shield of Falworth. Adaptation of Howard Pyles' Men of Iron. And who better to star in a movie set in England during the reign of Henry IV? That's right, Brooklyn-born Bernie Schwartz - you probably know him better as Tony Curtis. Tony in tights! And in Technicolor!! An anachroistic delight, but always I giggle when I hear Tony say "Look, in dat field ovah yondah, lies da castle of my faddah!"
The Court Jester, starring Danny Kaye. Because:
Hawkins : I've got it! I've got it! The pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle; the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true! Right?
Griselda : Right. But there's been a change: they broke the chalice from the palace!
Hawkins : They *broke* the chalice from the palace?
Griselda : And replaced it with a flagon.
Hawkins : A flagon...?
Griselda : With the figure of a dragon.
Hawkins : Flagon with a dragon.
Griselda : Right.
Hawkins : But did you put the pellet with the poison in the vessel with the pestle?
Griselda : No! The pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon! The vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true!
Hawkins : The pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon; the vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true.
Griselda : Just remember that.
Oh, there's lots more, but I'm too hungry to type!
