This Chick Here: The Ring

Aug 08, 2010 19:45

I have a Ring. Its a crown with one of the sides broken up and the top piece missing; its damaged, its old and it hardly ever matches my clothing.

I wear it on the ring finger of my left hand.

Adults always mock me with amused glances and disparaging remarks such as: "Are you getting married?" or "Who's your fiance?" or the ever popular "Your ring is on the wrong finger." accompanied by a pitying look for my apparent ignorance on the placement of rings. Even the photographers who were taking my Senior Pictures wanted to know if I wanted to switch the Ring to my other hand.

To that I looked them in the eye and told them 'No' with the barely restrained patience of someone who has been asked the same question too many times before.

No, the Ring is not on the wrong finger nor is it placed there because of my ignorance of ring placement rituals.

Its there for a reason.

Because you see my dear readers, it is in fact a purity ring, and before you go on with your 'crazed Jonas Brothers fan' nonsense; I have had this Ring since I was nine years old. Now, the actual Ring itself has changed over the years, I have had three and am currently looking for a replacement for this one. BUT, I made the decision not to have Sex before marriage on my own and intend to stick with it. I believe that sex is a gift, the ultimate gift of love and that it shouldn't be flung around willy-nilly. You're only a virgin once. That and the Bible frowns on it.

Now, that isn't to say that I'm above temptation or that I look down on people that haven't made the same decision that I have. Quite frankly, I don't care. I'm not going to reject you as a friend or a person because you had sex before getting married, or have a kid out of wedlock. I may not approve, but it really doesn't affect my opinion of you as a person. You are free to make your own decisions and I'm not going to judge you for them.

I just know where I stand.
The Ring is a reminder to keep the promise I made to myself and to God.

So next time you see a girl with a ring on her left hand, don't tease her, don't tell her its wrong.

Ask her why.
