Character: Ferb Fletcher
Fandom: Phineas and Ferb
Character Notes:
History: Ferb Fletcher has a rather simple history. He was born sometime in the ninties in England(there are a few hints that his hometown is Chelsea or at least his family has some connection to it.) and at a young age moved to the United States with his now single father, Lawrence Fletcher. They end up in Danville, a city located in an as of yet un-disclosed Tri-State Area. After Lawrence meets and marries a woman named Linda Flynn, Ferb winds up with a step-mother, brother and sister. Since the blended family comes together when the children are so young, Ferb considers Linda his mother just as Candace and Phineas consider Lawrence their dad. During the summer that the series takes place in Ferb goes through several adventures, from camping to finding a milk-shake bar on an asteroid. He tends to follow and stick to his brother, but he does go off on his own and have his own adventures. He has a crush on an older goth girl named Vanessa Doofenshmirtz and seems aware of his friend Isabella’s feelings for his brother. It’s never shown how, but Ferb is a polyglot and can speak several languages including Dolphin and Martian.

Personality:
The main point of Ferb’s personality is that he is a very laconic character. In most episodes he say only one line. In a few he remains silent through out the entire episode. So far there is not real reason why he speaks so little as he is neither dim nor shy. The few times he has been asked, his answer is always cut off by some sort of an interruption. It gives him a faintly mysterious air, and often his silence is a gag point in the show. With characters either asking if he speaks, or reacting to his blank facials expressions as though he were ranting or showing a large amount of emotion.
Given that the premise of the show is a pair of kids doing nearly impossible feats, Ferb has proven himself to be a pretty brave fellow. He tackles his step-brothers plans without hesitation, several of which are rather dangerous. He scales scaffolding and builds enormous structures without even blinking. He also puts himself into open danger if someone else is in trouble. Several times if their project of the day goes wrong, it’s Ferb that has thought of something to ensure that no one is hurt.
It’s rather a beating a dead horse sort of thing to say that Ferb is resourceful. While it is shown that Phineas is the idea man, Ferb is most often the one putting together the ‘nearly-impossible feats’ on a daily basis. His resourcefulness also is demonstrated through how observant he is. How he focuses on the smaller details and uses those details to flesh out a plan or to think on his feat. The best example I can give is in “Vanessasery Roughness” where he uses a fishing rod and a giant screwdriver to save Vanessa from a rampaging lawnmower.
An interesting aspect about Ferb’s character is, even though he is quiet, he is still able to show a sarcastic streak. Through simple looks and gestures he conveys more then any one liner could give. This is quiet often in reaction to what the other character say or do, rarely when it’s directed at him. AT least not intentionally, his normal reaction is just to stsare politely and either ignore the person or give a short pantomime in response.
His spontaneous and mature sides are often used as a foil for a given plot or gag in the show. It does show that he has significantly more depth then Phineas (who is the naïve innocent) and on some occasions even Candace. As I mentioned before he is observant, but unlike the other characters that react in a panic or take thing literally, Ferb steps back and looks at a problem or event and then gives Phineas a small nudge towards a way to fix it or even comes up with a simple and to the point solution himself. Despite all of this however, Ferb is still just a kid and will act like one whenever he feels like it. Whether it’s bouncing on gelatin, sliding down a waterslide with the help of butter or enjoying time with his family. His spontaneous moments are few is only because he is the stoic character, but they are made very obvious to those watching the show. He also seems to enjoy odd activities such as swimming like a dolphin and can dance extremely well.

Other: As the show is music heavy, Ferb can play several musical instruments. The one’s most often shown are the piano, drums, trumpet, harmonica and guitar. He can also sing as well, though he tends to be included in the more rap or rock style songs. At least voice wise.

He is the more mechanical of the two brothers, usually the one that does the majority of the building and technical aspects.

First Person (entry type):

[There’s a clunk before the feed turns on showing a simple backyard, a single tree is in view with a nice brown fence going around the area. Of course, the fact that there seems to be some sort of giant whirling machine in the center of the frame might through some people off.

Or maybe the fact that there is a young boy working on said machine calmly. He seems pretty focused, repairing whatever had come un done before closing the little hatch and standing up. He twirls his wrench before placing it in his pocket and turning to someone off screen. He doesn’t react beyond the faintest quirk of an eyebrow before looking straight at the camera.]

[He shakes his head and wanders over to turn off the function, but before he can there’s a voice muffled off screen. He opens his mouth to speak, his voice soft with an obvious British accent coming through.]

Actually I-

[His finger slips and the video function is cut off before he can finish his response.]

Third Person:

They were always together, stuck at the hip as it were. One followed the other, and while many thought only one lead- Ferb knew that if he ever wanted to he could choose the adventure for the day. It just rarely ever occurred to him to do so. Phineas was loads more creative and his ideas always seemed to find them in more interesting constraints. His brother’s ideas were also more challenging. If he tried to design a project that he was going to do, it always ended up inside whatever limitation he knew of at that particular moment. He never pushed beyond them simply because he could not figure out where else to go. He was practical in that sense, the simplest tools always best. With Phineas though…it was always something new, something he had never tried or even heard of being done and in a way that Ferb would never have thought of in a thousand summers let alone a single morning. Those ideas, those new twists and turns to the everyday allowed him to stretch those known limits, to push his boundaries to higher and higher levels. Oh he wasn’t arrogant enough to think that there would never be an idea that he could not fulfill, everyone after all did have limits. Ferb just hadn’t found his yet but in the event that it did happen, he knew full well that Phineas would keep that eternal smile and simply think of something else to do.
