Mr Robot Rant
Mr Robot makes me crazy. I started watching it months ago and just stopped. It itched under my skin where I couldn’t scratch. It was an annoyance I just couldn’t put my finger on. Tonight, I watched another episode and I realized what it is. The beauty of this show is that its detached tour of mental illness is still grounded in reality.
Eliot is a man who works for a company doing mundane bullshit for money and putting up with a whole bunch of neurotypical morons that he can neither relate to nor deal with. And at home he spends his time relating to the world in the only way that is comfortable to him. He comes to understand people by hacking them. He aggregates data and analyzes it in ways that he can understand. He’s trying to connect in the only way he knows how, all the while bringing us along as a known figment of his imagination and it’s a beautiful look into his head. And it’s beautiful because this is really how the world is for some people. It may be blown up and dramatized, but it’s still anchored in reality.
Then we get to see Tyrell and his crazy obsessive world. Or Shayla and her crazed drug dealer. This is the part of the show where we completely depart from this intimate story that is being told about Elliot. These side stories just take me out of the wonderful world of Mr Robot. It’s the same bullshit that’s on every other channel and for me it just drags the rest of the show down.
