The top eight videos currently showing on Select Live (artistically speaking):
8) Dare; Gorillaz.
(This animated band. Seriously. They have the most artistically-intricate video clips ever. And they're all dark and such, but this video is actually quite bouncy and...odd, really. Involves Murdoc waking up next to a rapper.)
7) Beautiful; James Blunt.
(Minimalism! Why does he jump into a freezing ocean? Why does he arrange his things neatly? And where the hell do they go in the next shot? Somebody get the continuity editor!)
6) Levitate; Opshop.
(He's running up the escalator and it looks really cool. Kinda like George Orwell's '1984'. We don't know quite why he does it, but it's compelling, and there are people with briefcases of cash. Sounds like my kind of escalator.)
5) Bad Day; Daniel Powter.
(You gotta love the repeated abuse of a billboard to make two people fall in love. Plus the split screen effect is kinda cool. I wanna live in a city that has parks like that.)
4) Chariot; Gavin DeGraw.
(Okay, so one-shot videos have been done to almost-death. It takes something really cool to get me to sit there and go 'wow' with a one-shot. This isn't a one-shot, but it's a good way of going through the whole music industry in a single scene. Oh, and nice green-screen too.)
3) Best of You; Foo Fighters.
(Nice little video with random stock footage. Why? Don't really have an answer. Buit it's really quite well-made. I'm liking the extreme close-ups of the lead singer. He has unnaturally good teeth.)
2) Dirty Little Secret; All-American Rejects.
(I'm not sure if that hyphen is supposed to be there. But this is what convinced me that the music video world is stealing my photography ideas. So I stole some of my signs from the video clip. Eye for an eye.)
1) Helena; My Chemical Romance.
(I mean, bravo. Having over 300 people dressed in black singing the chorus like some funeral dirge? Excellent. The concept of death as being a ballet dancer that can't quite touch people? Tres bien. Synchronised umbrella dancing in the rain on the steps of the church as pallbearers carry Helena out?
