Both my parents are good cooks. That's why I grew up preferring food at home than in any fastfood or restaurants. Meal time is always a special time especially when I was younger. My dad will surprise us with what he had cooked for us. There will always be a new menu for every meal. That's why my siblings and I developed the unpractical habit of losing appetite whenever we found out that what will have is the same menu as what we've already had. Dad always tell us that hotdogs, eggs, kikiam, squid balls and luncheon meat are not proper food. Hence they are not meant to be cooked or substituted as a meal.
When I was in kindergarten, I usually bring food for my recess apart from the lunch money that my parents gave me. Some of my classmates also bring their own pack of food. One of my classmates, the one who's seat is nearest to mine, always bring the same kind of food everyday. It's always red rice and hotdogs.
Like all typical kids, I was shy and timid. Curious as I am I didn't dare asked her how did her father cooked the red rice. Because I have seen white, yellow and brown rice but never the red one. That baffling question of my kindergarten year was forgotten until today.
Super typhoon reming was predicted to hit full blast in metro manila today. Apart from that Gloria have rescheduled the holiday for Bonifacio day for today. It's a holiday with a scheduled super typhoon. There's no classes in all levels. My mom a teacher, usually wake up early in time for her morning classes and also to cook food for my baon. Yes, I still bring baon up to now that I am a full pledged chemist and working. Old habits die hard. But today, she overslept. I woke up earlier than my usual to prepare my packed meal. Our fridge doesn't have anything but hotdogs and ham. I took them both out. Get two eggs from the pantry and cooked. My lunch is hotdogs and eggs. My breakfast is ham, mayo and pandesal.
When I opened my meal this lunch time, whoa, my white rice is now red. The drippings from the red colored hotdogs migrated to my rice thereby coloring it. never thought I was a stupid kid until now. hehee.
