Alex Louis Armstrong was born in Central City, Amestris. He is the second youngest and only male heir in the well known and respected Armstrong family. Later on in his life, following the traditions passed down the Armstrong family for generations, Alex joined the military. In there, he practiced alchemy for a while before taking the state alchemist test and passing it, which raised his rank to a major. As a major, he fought in the Ishvalan war, by sealing up the city so the citizens of Isvala couldn't escape. However, Major watched the blood-lust and the war, feeling it was not justified. He thought it was a pointless act of violence. So when a mother and her daughter tried to escape the city, Armstrong opened a hole in the wall to let them escape, but they were killed by another alchemist and member of the military: Solf J. Kimblee. After Alex refused orders because of a breakdown, he was shipped back to Central and they set over a replacement.
His first actual appearance in the anime was when he was fighting a alchemist named Issac, a rebel who went against the military. Armstrong met him a fight, but Issac was able to avoid him and set up transmutation circles all over Central City. Transmutation circles are needed in order to produce alchemy and what else is need is an equal exchange, meaning in order to produce alchemy, one must give something of equal or greater value. Now Issac made those circles so he could create and crash giant blocks of ice into the city's head military spot. However, Issac was stopped after great difficulty thanks to Ed and Al Elric, two young but skilled alchemists.
Armstrong made a few small appearances until he was sent to escort the Elric Brothers (Ed and Al) back to their home to get repairs on Ed's arm and leg, which are both made of metal (fully movable, may I might add. It's called automail). However, along the way they meet an alchemist named Dr. Marcoh who knew the secrets of an item called the Philosopher's Stone, which negates the rule of Equivalent Exchange. After they spoke with him, they went back to Ed and Al's house, where he meets Winry Rockwell and her grandmother, learning more about Ed and Al's tragic past (Them trying to bring back their dead mother...it didn't end well)
[ Personality ] :
Alex is a very confusing person when you meet him, mostly because he can change moods fairly easily. Thanks to his noble birth and the way he was brought up, Alex is well-mannered, polite, and well-liked by most. He also cares very much for his family and is proud of his ancestry. The Armstrong's are very skilled in different professions and Alex is no slouch, having taken up and mastered many of these skills for himself. Because of this, he is often known to shout out that such a trait "Has been passed down the Armstrong family for generations".
Alex also is a very emotional person, while usually happy, he often cries tears of joy or sorrow at times that may or may not seem appropriate. Because of this, Armstrong does not like to kill unless it is absolutely necessary, usually preferring to talk it out instead. He is known to break down and cry if an innocent person is killed. Final note on his emotional side is he is EXTREMELY protective about his friends and family, hurting them is a sure fire way to anger him.
The final aspect of his personality is that Alex has a very large ego. He is extremely hammy and can be loud when talking about things, usually when he is happy or sad. He never misses and opportunity to show the skills that "Have been passed down the Armstrong family for generations" and shows off with glee. In fact, his ego is so big that when his friends end up in a hospital, he'll stop by with flowers, rip his shirt off, flex and sparkle, then tell you that his perfect body will inspire you to heal.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
STRENGTHS:
Alex possesses a pair of gauntlets that allow him to use his alchemy, thanks to the transmutation circles on them. This allows him to transform, reshape, or redirect any solid object his fist touches at will. Like turning rocks into projectiles by punching them, being able to create spikes on a building's floor.
He also has an immense strength and endurance bordering on super human, being able to survive and counter attacks that would shatter most human's bones.
Despite Armstrong's massive size, he is quite fast and agile, able to avoid attacks at decent speeds.
He is extremely loyal to his friends and will fight to protect them. Hurting someone he cares about is a sure fire way of getting hurt.
Despite his hammy demeanor, he is actually quite intelligent.
WEAKNESSES:
He can be overly emotional. If an innocent person is killed he will sheds tears over them...and I don't mean a few.
While he doesn't mind fighting, he has a lot of mercy for his opponents and doesn't like to kill them...which can be used against him.
His...odd personality and massive size can sometimes cause people to dislike him or be afraid of him.
Sometimes he doesn't realize his own strength.
[ Other Important Facts ] :
Alex often rips his shirt off when he is happy or overly emotional (or if he just wants to). This is usually followed by him flexing and for an added dose of madness, sparkling. Pink sparkles of manliness as a matter of fact! ... and no you can't have any.
Sometimes even if his shirt is on he still sparkles.
It also should be noted that sometimes he doesn't even take his shirt off, it'll just disappear...no one knows why or how.
Whenever it is removed, it is throw roughly ten feet in the air in a dramatic fashion.
Yes I took four facts to describe his shirt removing skills, it's very important! :)

My suit is wet...THIS WILL NOT BE A PROBLEM! [cue him grabbing at his shirt and magically pulling all of his shirts off at once, throwing them high into the air.]
PERHAPS MY GORGEOUS FIGURE WILL CAUSE SOMEONE TO FIND ME?! [He then flexes, with pink sparkles all around him forming out of thin air.]
ELRIC BROTHERS, ARE YOU HERE? FOLLOW THE SOUND OF MY VOICE AND THE RADIANCE OF MY MUSCLES!!!
[And he just kind of stands there...flexing and speaking in his booming voice...hoping to find someone he knows.]
