i just had the most interesting conversation ever with my brother about obama and the war.  it's really eye-opening to hear from someone on the inside of all of this.  being in the military gives him a completely different view than most.  i wish that before people start talking about the war, they would have the opportunity to hear about it from someone who has been in it since the beginning 7 years ago.

some things he said that struck me:

"i had the opportunity to serve my first tour of duty in afghanistan and then a year later was lucky enough to go back to the same place.  i was able to see all of the good we did there in just one year.  but we were far from doing our job, so it's just now turning around for them."

"there are 700 murders on average in georgia every year (he lives in Atlanta) and if you multiply that by 7 (how many years we've been in this war) and then multiply every state's murder rate by 7, we've lost far more people to violence and hate in this country than we have in this war."

"i didn't vote for obama but he's my chief of staff now, so i'll do what he asks of me and so will everyone else in the military.  he's our boss now."

"al-qaeda doesn't think of time in the sense that we do.  they're patient.  it took them 11 years to plan 9-11. they're patient.  america isn't.  they know this.  they think of time as generations, centuries.  they are just waiting for us to pull out before we do our job."

he said many more things too.  it's so amazing that he's my brother and doesn't waiver in his beliefs and wants to fight not just for our country but for the safety of other countries as well.  i wish he could talk to everyone who has questions about it.
