Character Name; Yuuko “Isako” Amasawa (Amasawa Yuuko)
Fandom; Dennou Coil
Timeline; From episode 23, when Isako runs into the portal to the “other side.”
Abilities before entering the city (if applicable); Her Imago, the natural ability she has that allows her to use the code reactor present in her body to create hacker codes to use as weapons in the virtual world. She also had a pair of glasses which connected to this virtual world which she will lose upon entrance to Tano.
History/Background; Dennou Coil takes place about a decade in the future, when a company called Megamass mass-produced portable computers in the form of glasses. These glasses allowed the user to 'see' a virtual world layered on top of the real world, giving birth to such things as cyber pets.
A number of years before the series opens, Yuuko Amasawa and her brother Nobuhiko were involved in a traffic accident, which killed Yuuko's brother on the spot. Their parents had already passed away, leaving the two children with no one but each other. When Yuuko awoke and was told that her brother had died, she could not take the news and closed herself off mentally.
At this time a new medical treatment was being developed, and Yuuko's withdrawal into her mind provided the perfect test subject. Using new 'coils' technology, Yuuko was to be placed into a virtual world in her mind that would work to heal the wounds of her heart as well as body. Under the supervision of Doctor Okonogi "Patient 4423" began treatment.
In this world Yuuko was able to live with her brother for a little while longer. It was during this time that her brother gave her the nickname "Isako," meaning "brave girl" (This is the name she will be referred to for the rest of the app). The world was not meant to be permanent. It was created as a way for Isako to gradually say goodbye to her brother. However, something went terribly wrong when another girl by the name of Yuuko Okonogi (Yasako) stumbled into this virtual world. The girl met Isako's virtual brother, who in turn gave her a name as well, "Yasako." In thanks, Yasako gave him a small peck on the cheek, but it was that kiss that started it all.
Isako saw that kiss and became enraged, forgetting that she was supposed to be saying goodbye to her brother. She vowed to never let anyone take him. It was from these evil feelings that Michiko was born. Michiko was an entity that stole children away to this virtual realm, all the while awaiting Isako's return.
Isako woke up, her mind yet incomplete. In this vulnerable state she came in contact with Sousuke Nekome, who led Isako to believe that her brother was still alive. So for years she desperately searched for a way to bring her brother's denno body (essentially his consciousness, or soul) back from the 'other side.'
It is during this quest that the series begins. Isako began to steal cyber pets to use as bait for a mysterious black shadow called an "illegal," which was thought to be some kind of computer virus. She intended to use the illegals to collect ‘kirabug,’ a powerful substance with a connection to Michiko. This connection allowed for a portal to be opened between the real world and the virtual one. Deceived by Nekome, Isako thought that through this process she could see her brother again and save him.
Isako stole a girl’s pet with the intention of extracting the illegal inside it. The pet belonged to Yasako, though neither of the girls remembered each other. After extracting the illegal, Isako tried to open a portal to the other side but failed.
Sometime after this it was finally revealed that Yasako had indeed met Isako’s brother once before. Isako had no idea what to make of this and instead responded with anger. Things only become all the more confusing as a boy, Haraken, asked Isako to bring him to the other side with her. In order to avoid Saiichi, a government anti-virus system, she if left with no choice but to accept Haraken’s offer. Using the code he gave her, Isako was able to destroy the Saiichi. However, she lost the location of the portal she had created to the other side and it closed before she could find it again. Another attempt had ended in failure.
Due to Isako’s destruction of the Saiichi, Nekome saw the perfect opportunity to betray Isako to reach his own ends. He alerted the company Megamass to Isako’s presence, and Isako became subsequently hated and shunned by her classmates. Only Yasako stuck by her side, but Isako continued to shun her attempts at friendship, until while on the run from Megamass she was forced to take refuge in Yasako’s house. By this time she had found out that her brother had already died and that Nekome had been deceiving her this whole time.
While at Yasako’s house she discovered that Yasako’s cyber pet was sick. Perhaps due to Yasako’s kindness to her and for her previous kidnapping of it, Isako wished to save it, but her hacker codes did little good. At that opportune moment, Isako got a call from Nekome, offering her a way to save the pet. She was sure that he was trying to deceive her once more, but she had little choice.
She and Yasako made their way quickly to the Megamass building. Along the way they had to fight against a new and improved form of the company’s anti-virus programs. Isako used what codes should could to stop them, but it was taking a heavy toll on her body. The code reactor within her body was becoming unstable each time she used one of these powerful codes. At the rate she was going, her denno body (her consciousness) would separate from her real body and she would die. But she couldn’t let that happen without first trying to save Yasako’s pet. Which is why once the two got to the Megamass building Isako took the pet and went ahead on her own, in order to keep Yasako from getting hurt.
But as Isako had thought, the whole setup turned out to be a trap. Nekome had only wanted to use the pet to open a portal to the other side. Isako couldn’t save a simple cyber pet, so what hope did she have to save her own brother? She thought that she had been the one to let her brother die, that she had let him be taken by Michiko. Plagued by these thoughts and with her code reactor about to burst, Isako flung herself into the portal with a burst of light.
Personality; Isako is cold, stubborn, and aloof. She has her own agenda in life which, she believes, gives her no time to play around in frivolous games with her classmates. To reach her goal of rescuing her brother she distances herself from others and refuses to make friends. She appears to her classmates as stuck-up and mean, causing them to keep away from her, which is just what she had intended in the first place.
However, there is a downside to this cold-hearted appearance. She is frequently challenged by others who wish to put her in her place. This leads to many fights which she finds largely useless, since she places herself at a much higher level than the kids she fights against.
Inside, she is truly a broken child. At only twelve years old she has lost both her parents and her brother. She even thinks that she is responsible for her own brother’s death. She is afraid that letting another person into her heart will crack the fragile mask she has put on to keep the rest of the world out. Yasako is the only one who has threatened that carefully crafted image, and Isako hates her for it. If any others were to try and attempt to come as close as Yasako did then it is likely that Isako would react in the same way, with hate. However, if a person continues to push past her hard shell, then it is possible for Isako to form feelings of attachment to that person, enough so that she will protect them, even at the expense of her own life.
Loss upon arriving; Memories of Yasako.
Ability gained; Astral projection.
