It has been a long time coming but I have recently started to take driving lessons - my family can breath a sigh of relief that I'm FINALLY doing it!!
But to be absolutely honest, I really REALLY didn't want to get my licence. I enjoy being a passenger and getting chauffered around. I enjoy bragging about how I have the smallest carbon footprint in comparison to other people I know ^^ And let's not forget the cost benefits of taking public transport, although our public transport system can be very crowded and not very efficient on most days.
However...life can be a bitch and in my country, all the places and opportunities (friends, jobs, studies etc) are spread out all over the place and sometimes the best ones are located in areas where it's virtually impossible to get to via public transport. Not to mention, it becomes a drag and a burden on my conscience when I have to go and ask another person to take me to places, it makes me feel too.....dependent on people and I feel guilty for taking up other people's time -_-
In any case, my lessons have been progressing nicely, I've been driving in quiet streets in the off-peak hours and have been steadily getting the hand of things well. Although, I must say there are some obnoxious drivers out there who aren't willing to give a beginner a chance (YES, I'm talking about you stupid range rover that parked across two lanes when exiting a street - you should have given way to me!! ><").
I'm still building on the foundational skills of controlling the vehicle and steering but I was really happy about today's lesson because the instructor gave me the chance to test my skills on a moderate traffic area. It was great, the instructor said that she doesn't usually take students out to the traffic areas until after several lessons but she saw that I was capable enough - I was ECSTATIC!!
Personally, I don't mind the extended supervised learning hours for beginner drivers even though others think it's a drag. I strongly believe that driving is a very important skill involving many small technical areas and requires consistent close attention at all times. Thus, I don't mind spending more hours with a supervisor if it helps to build my confidence and experience in driving safely - who knows what could happen, it could save my life some day ^^ *touch wood*
