夜王

I've recently been watching a JP drama called "YAOH" (夜王).
It's pretty old but from the recommendation of a friend, it apparently depicts a very "realistic" view of the typical male host's life in Japan. Of course, it's TV and not without the typical dramatisation and Japanese themes of valorising the main character as a "unique" individual amongst all the money-hungry men that inhabit the (apparently) competition filled life of Japanese hosts.

It follows some dude called Ryosuke who we know nothing about except that he's a failure in all his past jobs and ended up being a host under the "kind" influence of an old (wealthy) female designer. He works at a host club called "Romeo" and the story basically follows his journey to become the No.1 Host of Romeo against the current No.1 host: Seiya (he is so funny looking at him because he's always got that 'sucked-in-cheek' look on his face and his eyebrows always make him look angry!).

I couldn't give the drama my full attention after the first episode because it all just got sappy and warm/fuzzy. I haven't watched a lot of JP drama because they all seem to have the same upbeat/never give up theme that gets booooring very quickly. Do women dress up all glamorous-like when they go to host clubs?? Host's are sociable people but also good-looking, strangely, none of the hosts in the drama were really eye-catching O_o|| (except, Kaname Jun...^^) Further, the main character hardly ever runs into any problems, it's like a smooth ride as he tries to solve all the problems behind the women and try to make them feel "happy". And of course, he's not doing it for money...he's the "good guy".

Overall, it offers an interesting and "colourful" glimpse into the life of a host, worth checking out. Though, it just feels like the child-friendly, expertly filtered and censored version of the real nitty-gritty world of hosts XD
