Forty years ago today, the Monkee's 'I'm A Believer' hit the top of the British charts.  It would stay there for about a month.  The song had already been No1 in the US since the end of December, and would continue at that spot until halfway through February, at which point I suspect everyone in America was kinda sick of it.

I was OBSESSED with the Monkees in 8th grade! Have we ever talked about this? I have been enjoying your blog, and it occurred to me the other day it has a lot to do with my own early-adolescent fascination with late 60’s bands like the Monkees, so I’m very excited to see them included here. I’m embarrassed to admit that somewhere, like Joe, I have a copy of the atrocious “Pool It!” cassette, once named my pet lizard “Auntie Grizelda,” used to spell my name with a double “e” on the end instead of a “y” because I thought it looked cooler, and nursed a crush on Micky Dolenz. Yikes. Anyway, the other, somewhat alarming thing that you have caused me to realize is that while 20 years seemed like an impossibly long time when I was a dorky 13-year old listening the Monkee’s anniversary album (“That Was Then, This is Now,” anyone?), the same amount of time has passed again since then in what feels like the blink of an eye. Forty years ago? Really??

No, you'd never mentioned that before. Blogging is great; we learn things about everybody!

'Auntie Grizelda' is one of my two favority Monkees songs, along with 'For Pete's Sake.' The latter needs a post of its own at some point.
