Long before horror met Hollywood
the boulevards were congested with emotion.
Long before ships could sail
the sky was as impossible as the ocean.
Long before we witnessed our home planet
half green, half blue
half old, half new
god was still arbitrary yet authoritative.
We will cross the universe in time.
We will know everything
and everything will shine.
Our presence will expand like a supermassive black hole
gaining momentum fueled by hubris.
This is no fairy tale. No moral will be revealed.
There is no good guy or glorified perspective.
Our mistakes are ours to speculate over.
We can blame it on the politicians
as we're blown to pieces.
We can blame it on our mothers
for protecting us from rejection.
We can blame it on our fathers
for silencing our cries with force.
We can blame it on the church
for interfering with scientific inquiry.
We can blame it on ourselves
for keeping it bottled up
to project an image without shadow.
7 billion conclusions
not one of them right
not one of them wrong
not one of them even close.
I'll spend my final moment reading
of the collapse of the Roman Empire
and inhale deeply as the word 'retribution'
breaks with the page
particle by particle.
The ensuing silence will be the first fact we all agree on.
