Summary: Rei always looks at Kira.
Rei sprawled on the sofa, flipping through his bike magazine when Kira suddenly slipped into the room. She was walking quietly but Rei always knew when she was in the room. He looked up at her and saw that she was clutching her sketchbook.
“Lend me your body?” she said.
He had to grin at that request. The same request she’d given him all that time ago. She didn’t look so shy any more though. He raised an eyebrow and gestured at his clothes.
“Should I strip?”
“Clothes on,” she said, swatting him with the sketchpad. “And yes, you can keep looking at the magazine. I just want to get a picture of you.”
Rei tried not to look sheepish at the magazine comment. It didn’t seem to matter that he was some years older now, if Kira tried to draw him without giving him something to do, he still fell asleep. She didn’t seem to mind so much though. As he let his eyes drift back down to the bikes, he heard the beginning of her pencil on the page.
“How come you need to look at me?” he asked, automatically moving his lips slightly less than normal. “You’ve seen me plenty of times. And there’s all those stupid photos that the old man keeps making us take. Don’t you have me in your head by heart?”
It was only a teasing comment but he sensed that Kira was thinking seriously about how to say whatever was on her mind and so he waited for her response quietly. He knew that she’d speak when she was ready.
“I could draw from a photograph,” she said slowly. “Or from memory. I do know you by heart . But something that’s important for all artists is to make sure that we’re looking rather than seeing. I see you every day. I just want to make sure that I’m still looking.”
Rei considered this remark, even losing interest in the bikes as Kira rapidly sketched. Usually, stuff that Kira said about art went over his head a bit but he actually thought he understood this one. Before he’d fallen in love with Kira, he’d always seen her but he didn’t think he’d ever looked, not properly until that picture she’d given him. He guessed that this was the same thing.
When she stood up, he caught her hand and pulled her down to him, looking at the pad. It was only a rough sketch of him - he knew Kira would fill in the colours and the other lines later. He kissed her hand and reached up to stroke her hair before pulling her own into a proper kiss.
“I always look at you,” he told her.
“Still?” she said with a small smile.
“Always.”
