[Title] No Business Like Showbusiness
[Fandom] Chicago (movie)
[Rating] PG-13 for mentions of death and sex
[Notes/Summary] On her way to prison, Velma reflects on the life skills she possesses.
Velma always figured a career in showbiz had prepared her for anything life could throw.
('Cept seeing Veronica banging Charlie, and that made no sense because hadn't she been rejected by two-bit dance hall owners and snooty directors and leery chorus managers way too many times? But then, with every other thanks-but-no Veronica had been with her to curse and share a cigarette and lead them through the snow or rain or slush to the nearest bar -
Bullet plugged her right between my eyes -)
Showbiz has prepared her now. She's had dressing rooms way smaller, darker'n smellier than this police van
(and she'd always had to share 'em with Veronica, at least that won't be a problem now)
and the cuffs pinch and jingle but hey, she's worn far more impractical jewellery in her time.
And fear - hell, she's smiled into fear's eyes a buncha times before (not on stage, never on stage, but like a month after they got to Chicago and the snow had been three foot deep and no work, no food, just Veronica smoking their last cigarette while she herself tries to wash in water where lumps of ice bob). She's not scared of jail and she knows court'll just be another audition.
So why's she feel like life's a staircase and she's just busted a heel?
(Veronica kneeling on the floor cutting out film star pictures and humming) (The next day she bobs her hair)
she's banging Charlie and my face in the hotel mirror'n I look like I suddenly decided to get into serious acting
She watches
This
This we did in perfect unison!
Well, shit. There's never any place for guilt in this business.

[Notes/Summary] Two girls with the same name discover they're not so different.
Yuko always sees the tall girl when she arrives at Dr Chiodo's office. You're not supposed to look at other people because everyone likes to pretend this isn't happening, but the girl is so tall and with her long dark hair and wary face, it's hard not to notice her. She wears a different school uniform, so maybe that's why Yuko isn't scared of her. Nothing to do with Shiroiwa Junior High and its fighting and boys and blood -
Or maybe it's that the girl is someone who should be scary - who would be scary, if Yuko was in class with her - but is visiting Dr Chiodo, so is probably almost as much (of a loser) (of a coward) of a problem as Yuko is.
One day the sun is shining and when she arrives she sees the tall girl standing by the wall, looking up, and she stops.
The tall girl is reaching up. She's reaching up to a cat on the wall and Yuko stands and watches and sees how the girl's wariness has turned into nervous concentration. The cat spits and hisses and scratches out at the tall girl, and then it vanishes into the bushes.
The tall girl sighs. She doesn't even look sad. She just stares down at the bleeding marks on her hand.
"Um... I've... I've got some plasters in my... in my bag..." Yuko manages to say.
The girl turns. The wariness is back. "Oh. Thanks, that... would be nice."
As she holds out her hand for the plasters, Yuko sees her skin is marked with dozens of scratches.
"What -" she starts, and then remembers she isn't supposed to be asking questions.
"I like cats," she says instead.
The tall girl almost smiles. "I do too." Then she looks regretfully down at her hand, and Yuko wonders why she keeps liking cats when they're mean, and hurt her. (If anyone ever hurt her she would - she would - she doesn't know what, but it wouldn't involve going back for more.)
"Are you -" Yuko indicates Dr Chiodo's office before she can think. "I - um, I have an appointment, I have to -"
"I see you," the tall girl says. She stares down at her feet. "I go there too."
"I'm Sakaki - Yuko Sakaki."
The girl does smile, properly, this time. "I'm Sakaki too."
Yuko has to run then, because she's about to be late, but she manages to smile back. She would have thought that the tall girl could never be like her, and for them to have the same name would be stupid, a joke from the universe. But instead it's a - a sign from God, maybe. Because the tall girl is, perhaps, just as shy as her.
