Summary: Keita Iijima muses on luck. Set at the end of the movie.
Every since they first met it's been the same. Shinji is the lucky one; Shinji can saunter into a room full of strangers and leave with them thinking how amazing he is, Shinji can walk the fine line between having a life and failing classes without breaking a sweat; Shinji can play basketball as easy as breathing. While Yutaka's gonna be pushed around all his life, is the kind of kid teachers never notice because he doesn't have any brilliance and yet is too scared to goof off, and can trip over something in an empty room.
Keita's always figured he fell between the two extremes. Pissed off and amused people in equal amounts; smart enough but still had to put the grind in; pretty clumsy but not carrying it to the heights of genius that Yutaka did.
But now?
Yutaka died thinking Nanahara had come to find them, thinking it was all gonna be okay; maybe by the time the bullets hit he'd already flashed forward to that glorious future of the three of them going fugitive, hiding out together in motels, depending on no one but each other. That kind of death sounded pretty good to Keita. But Yutaka's owed some luck. Still, you had to be jealous.
But he can still count his own blessings. The main one being that Yutaka's death hasn't sunk in - half of his brain is frozen, going huh?, seeing Yutaka cut down in front of them just like that - and the other half is too busy realising how much blood he's losing and how cold he's getting and how he feels really crap now and so could we just get this over with please?
So he hasn't had time to care about one of them dying, and the other - it's all going black now, but he can just make out Shinji's face, hear the guy calling through the roar and thud of his heartbeat. Shinji'll have time to care, won't he? Not so lucky now, he thinks, and then you don't deserve that. So Shinji'll probably only have a few minutes left himself (unless the luck kicks in again)? A few minutes is a few minutes too long.
But he's never been any good at dealing with other people being sad. Make a joke. So he throws back Shinji's own words at him: "When we go... it'll be together..." Blood filling his mouth. Shinji's eyes widen and as Keita falls into the darkness he realises he's dying as he lived - cracking jokes when now really isn't the time. Sorry, Shinji... I was a jerk.
