The Naughtiest Girl by Enid Blyton
G
Elizabeth, Arabella

"You're like one of those cakes in a baker's shop - you look all sweet and lovely on the outside, but inside there's nothing but air and sickly cream," said Elizabeth hotly. Arabella had listened to this outburst with a fact first red than white; and Elizabeth, whose temper faded as quickly as it came, felt a stab of guilt. "I'm sorry," she said more quietly. "That was unkind. But I still think it was mean of you to tease Jenny."

Arabella's temper was slower burning.

"And what do you think I care what a girl like you says?" she demanded. "Everyone knows you're the worst girl in the school - and you were only made a monitor as a sort of school joke, to see how long they'd last before they threw you out."

Elizabeth opened her mouth to reply, but thought better of it and bit her lip hard. Taking a deep breath, she looked away, over Arabella's shoulder and called after a mousy-haired girl.

"Joan! Joan, wait for me!"

Without a further word, she left Arabella and - despite herself - Arabella felt a sneaking sense of admiration for Elizabeth's control of a notoriously hair-trigger temper under all the provocation that Arabella could muster. She stood looking after Elizabeth, and the altercation stuck in her mind long after Elizabeth had forgotten it.
