Quico’s throat still hurt but the scarf was helping. No-one had warned him just how much sand and dust he would end up breathing in on Pandora.

Still, it was better than being at home.

The sun was rising now, casting the long shadows of Skags across the wasteland. A humanoid shadow in the distance shuddered back and forth, Quico knew by now this would be a Bruiser. Most of the residents of Pandora had long succumbed to delusions and paranoia; the mercenaries had become violent and unpredictable.

“You gonna let them get up close and personal before you taken ‘em down?”, the soldier, Roland, had been watching him for a few minutes now.

“Just thinking”, Quico ran his fingertips over the rifle in his hands. The strange guy - the one with the pet bat...thing - had given it to him.

“Out here, thinking will get you dead”, Roland nodded towards the Skags, as if Quico hadn’t been aware of them creeping closer. With a resigned sigh, Quico shouldered his rifle and peered down the scope. He squeezed the trigger - pop, pop - and two thuds told him they had found their targets. Swivelling in his seat, he aimed towards the Bruiser in the distance. The brute was lumbering in his direction, had probably started to do so as soon as the first gunshot.

“Never understood moving towards gunfire myself”, Roland commented as Quico steadied his aim, “Though with these guys, never too sure how much they’ve got left working upstairs”. Quico took a deep breath, and his finger twitched on the trigger.

The Bruiser remind Quico of him. His throat felt dry and itchy again, and his stomach twisted as he took another breath. It didn’t look anything like his father, Quico tried to reason with himself, it was just a lingering fear of any man built like him…

He pulled the trigger.

Roland whistled beside him as the Bruiser crumpled into the dust, “Nice shot kid”, and Quico got back to his feet, glad that his legs were not as wobbly as he had expected them to be.
“We’re moving out soon, come and grab some breakfast. Ain’t nothing special, but it’s food”, Roland clapped him on the shoulder. Without a backwards glance, Quico followed him.

Apparently, my generator thinks Stardew Valley is a creepy place.

“Any ideas on what caused this?”, Booth whispered beside her.

“You know I don’t make guesses, I need to get the remains back to the lab”, Brennan continued with her examination, “If you’ll just give me a few more minutes…”

“That”, and Booth pointed towards an area of particular trauma, “That looks like a cause of death to me”.

“Perhaps”, and Brennan nearly smiled at the frustrated noise Booth made, “It looks like a crushing injury”.

“I could have worked that out”, Booth groaned, “Doesn’t it freak you out? The way they’re staring?”

Brennan looked up and realised that Booth’s insistence on speed was perhaps well intentioned as it seemed like every resident of the small town was standing within viewing distance. It must have been her eyes playing tricks on her, but it almost seemed like they never blinked.

“Likely just in shock.”

“Or trying to see how much we can find out”, Booth looked uneasy, “I’ve seen ‘Hot Fuzz’, I know how villages like this work”.

“Hot what?”, Brennan tore her gaze away from the people and back to the remains.
“Never mind, you good to go? I’m good to go, let’s get that van over here”, and with that Booth stood up and beckoned the forensics van to drive a bit closer, “You’ll thank me later when we’re not impaled on miniature houses”.
