[Notes/Summary] Rachel has come up with the perfect cover story. Marco's not convinced.

“Oh, give it a rest, Marco,” Rachel said over the noise of the food court. “We need to have a better excuse lined up for when we're spotted in places we shouldn't be, all wearing leotards and bits of animal. Trust me, this is the perfect explanation.”

Marco didn't look convinced. “I'm trying to trust you, but I can't help thinking you're making us memorise a bunch of random words as a really early April Fool's prank. Seriously, who talks like this?”

“Amy at gymnastics' older sister who's at art college, that's who,” Rachel said. “She walked in on me coming out of seagull morph and she came out with all this stuff without me saying a word, so I figured why not run with it? Now stop goofing off. Someone asks you what you're doing standing around in lycra with feathers on your face, what are you going to say?”

Marco rolled his eyes. “Okay, okay. We're an experimental interpretative dance troupe.”

“Yeah, you could sound a little more like you believed it,” Jake said, grinning.

“And weren't we going to try and get 'collective' in there?” Cassie said.

Marco sighed. “We're an experimental interpretative dance troupe collective. Our mission is to seek out new life, explore new worlds, okay, fine, our mission is to, uh, reclaim, uh, places from... The Man by... dancing in them with nature and stuff...”

“We reclaim both public and private spaces through dance,” Cassie said, laughing. “We, uh, we celebrate the power of nature through movement and... um...” She took a gulp of soda and carried on, “Uh... through representation of animals via, um, natural materials. Like feathers. We... reject boundaries such as, uh, No Trespassing signs because we... we believe art does not have boundaries.”

“That won't stop us getting arrested,” Marco said.

“Yeah, but it might stop us getting identified as the Andalite bandits the Yeerks are looking for,” Rachel said. “You're just mad because you're the only one who can't sound convincing when he says it.”

“Okay, well, what about if Ax and Tobias are there?” Marco demanded. “How do the bird and the alien fit into it?”

“Tobias is easy,” Cassie said. “I mean, we've just brought an actual bird with us because he... represents the power and life of actual nature. And... Ax... hmm... okay, Ax is a model which symbolises... like, humanity's potential evolution? The infinite possibility of... life?”

Rachel and Jake both looked at her in admiration.

“You're good at this,” Jake said. “What is it, a side-effect of morphing skill?”

“She's too good at it.” Marco glowered. “It's worrying, if you ask me. She's been taken over by a Yeerk that also happens to be into interpretative dance.”

“You know...” Rachel looked thoughtful. “Maybe in order to really maintain the cover, we ought to come up with some routines...”

Marco banged his head down on the table, groaning.

[Notes/Summary] The girls have found a mysterious black notebook. Debate ensues about what to do next.

Osaka placed the black notebook on the desk, and the others huddled round it.

“See?” Osaka pointed. “The human whose name is written in this note will die. Right there.”

Yomi snorted. “So it's another of those creepy chain letter-type things. Where's the part where you have to send it to twenty friends?”

“I dunno.” Kagura flipped through the pages. “I mean... it doesn't look like someone scribbled that for a joke. Maybe it's some kind of new stationery thing? Like when everyone was buying those pens that smelt of fruit?”

“They were so cool!” Chiyo said, bouncing on her heels.

“Yeah.” Osaka grinned. “I used'ta keep licking 'em by mistake, they smelt so good.”

“I miss them, I wonder why -”

“Hey!” Tomo slammed a fist down on the desk. “Can we focus for a moment on the important thing? That is, the possible murder notebook in front of us?”

“Oh, come on,” Yomi said. “Don't tell me you believe it's actually got magic powers.”

“There's only one way to find out.” Tomo grabbed a pen and held it up dramatically. “We write down a name... and see what happens.”

Yomi rolled her eyes as Chiyo wailed, “We can't do that! What if it worked?”

“Then we'd know we had a murder notebook. That's the point.”

“But we don't want a murder notebook!”

“You may not,” Tomo said, an evil grin on her face. “I, on the other hand, can think of plenty of uses for it...”

Everyone eyed her nervously. Yomi picked the notebook up and moved it to the other side of the desk.

“No way,” Chiyo said, shaking her head. “Nuh-uh. If there's any chance this thing could be real - and, I mean, there's no way it could work, but - if we thought it actually could, then we should tell someone right away. Like the police, or... or a teacher or something...”

“Woah. Woah. Hold on.” Tomo held out her hand. “Chiyo-chan, listen to what you're suggesting. We can't possibly tell any adults about this.”

“Why not?”

“Can you imagine what would happen if Miss Yukari got her hands on it?”

There was a long pause. Everyone gulped.

“We should hide it,” Chiyo said at last, her face pale. “We should hide it somewhere very safe.”

“Right,” Osaka said. “We're the only thing standin' between Miss Yukari and world domination.”

Yomi frowned. “I still think it's a dumb joke, but Miss Yukari would probably buy into it. Okay, fine, we'll hang on to it. I still reckon we're going to look like idiots when we find out someone made it for a laugh. Or we see a bunch of others just like it on sale.”

“Well, see, we can make sure that doesn't happen by testing it first...” Tomo said, reaching out for the notebook again.

Sakaki grabbed it away from her.

“Don't worry, Chiyo-chan,” she said. “I'll take care of it.”

“That's the spirit!” Kagura cheered, slapping Sakaki on the back. “Just don't take me out with it so you can win the next baseball tournament!”

“Sakaki would never kill anyone,” Chiyo said. “We can trust her!”

“Doesn't smell of fruit, though, does it?” Osaka said. “Dat's a pity.”
