Summary> Thursday thinks about Morse's slightly unusual daemon ...
“Now, you know I’m a fair man Thursday,” Bright said, petting his chihuahua and looking self-righteous. “I never judge a man by his daemon. I knew an excellent officer, a most upstanding gentleman with a hyena daemon of all things! But I must say … ”
He peered through the window with an expression of distrust. Thursday looked too, trying not to sigh. It was unfortunate perhaps that Morse’s daemon was so very … noticeable. She was currently standing over him as he worked, her trunk draped over the back of Morse’s chair.
“Elephants are very intelligent creatures, Sir,” he said. “Very tough and strong too. Bit … out of the ordinary perhaps but I suspect there’s a few that will respect him more for that.”
Bright gave an expressive sniff and his chihuahaua did the same. Thursday felt Doris bristle slightly at his side but knew that it wouldn’t be noticeable to anybody but him. Doris was too good for that.
“Well,” Bright said. “You know him better than I, Thursday. Currently anyway.”
Thursday nodded politely and accepted the dismissal. He walked out of the office and looked at Morse and the elephant again. She was twitching the tip of her trunk very slightly, patting Morse’s shoulder. She wasn’t a big mover, on the whole. It was one of the things that people found faintly off-putting actually, that stillness. People didn’t really expect that in such a big creature.
Personally, Thursday thought it was a good thing. Showed the lad had himself under control, to an extent anyway. Good thing in a policeman. Good thing in anyone with a big powerful daemon.
“Morse.”
Morse looked up and his daemon turned her head, blinking her long-lashed eye. Thursday nodded at them both.
“Come on. We have to get on this.”
Morse nodded and got to his feet. The elephant walked after him, surprisingly graceful for something so large. She never seemed to knock anything over, despite everything.
Morse stood out a bit. Was a bit different from everyone else. That daemon of his made that very clear. But she also made all the good bits clear too, in Thursday’s eyes. Clever. Careful. Strong. Bit of a temper when roused maybe but then, what dog daemon didn’t say the same thing?
No. Morse would be all right. Him and that daemon both.
With a bit of training anyhow.
