Title: Waking Up
Fandom: Firefly
Rating: PG
Word Count: 621
Summary: River wakes up to a strange new world.
Waking.
She is waking. She is cold. Cold and strange, like death. Has she been dead? No, you don’t wake up from death, she knows that, dead is dark and forever, fantasy, dreams, you can only wake from sleep … so she has been asleep in a cold place, a very cold place, cryogenic freezing, she knows about that, she knows … she knows so many things … too many things …
Voices. Oh, so many voices, some louder than others. Angry, confused, scared.
… hurting me, what if being woken too early has hurt her, oh no, no, please not after everything …
A girl, in a box! He’s got a girl in a box, that’s just not right …
… fucking pervert …
Why, why are they all shouting so loudly? They want something, they always want something, they want, they want … so angry, she doesn’t know why they’re so angry, there’s no reason, will they hurt her more because they’re angry? They hurt her so much, they hurt everybody so much, she hears them scream down the halls, at night, they scream so loud, so loud …
She screams too. She needs to get away from the terrible cold place or they’ll put her to sleep again, no more sleep, sleep only leads to badness and danger and terror …
Out of the box. People are still shouting, too much, too much, the floor is cold too, she doesn’t know where she is, nothing is right, nothing …
“River.”
Hot, hot on her arms. Her name. Her name, then more words, more words than she should be able to hear, it’s like that, cacophony, don’t know what to hear, what not to hear …
“It’s okay it’s not okay, it’s not, I’m so scared, oh let her be all right it’s okay, it’s okay, I’m here I won’t leave you, even if we have to die together, I won’t ever leave you again ....”
She knows that voice. She knows that voice. So long, memories like tiny shafts of sunlight in black swirl-thick clouds, a good voice, a missed voice …
“Simon?”
She sees with her eyes and it is him, Simon kneeling in front of her, older and his face all screwed up, feelings washing out of him, sad and anxious and grieving because she’s older too and she’s broken and cold and he’s so scared and he doesn’t know what they’ve done so she needs to explain and the others are still talking, confused babble about her knowing his name and what’s happening and how there’s a buck-naked girl sittin’ right there …
“Simon, they talk to me, they want me to … ”
But her words get lost coming out of the mouth, so easy to think them but harder to say, everything is so hard, so very hard, so scary …
“They’re gone!” Simon interrupts her with real words or she thinks they are, it’s hard to tell the difference. “They’re gone, they’re gone, we’re safe now oh God, please let us be safe now, please please … We’re safe, I’m here …”
He holds her close, protective, safe. His clothes smell funny, not like they used to. Not like home. Nothing smells like home any more, home is all gone, lost in the fog, the terrible, terrible fog …
“What the hell is this?” A real voice. He was shouting earlier but he doesn’t sound like shouting now, he’s confused and different.
“This is my sister,” Simon says, his arms all warm around her and River realises real, he’s real, a proper person, not a fuzzy sun-memory but her actual brother.
River wonders if maybe, just maybe, she is safe after all.
Title: Red Attracts
Fandom: Kaldor City
Rating: PG
Word COunt: 280
Summary: Justina and Iago are both somewhat confused by their actions ...
Justina isn’t sure why she is doing this.
All right, Iago is attractive. Very attractive. And he certainly knows what he’s doing, oh yes, that’s for sure. But she doesn’t usually take men to her bed so soon … especially men that might not be entirely trustworthy …
Not that many people in Kaldor City are entirely trustworthy. Certainly not the people who worked for Uvanov. There is no reason to expect Iago to be different. None at all.
But he’s attractive and he’s purring her name and doing very pleasing things with his hands and really, Justina suspects you can over-think things. Just let things happen as they happened. That’s her motto.
Perhaps it’s just that he has good taste in paintings.

Iago isn’t sure why he is doing this.
Oh, Justina is very attractive. Very attractive. And she certainly knows what she’s doing and the entire experience is very pleasant. But he is usually careful about who he takes to bed, vets and examines them, makes sure they will not be a danger to him.
And yet somehow, he has gone to bed with Justina, despite knowing only a bare minimum about her. A move that could backfire if he needs to blame her for the assassination plot. It would be unfortunate if he had to kill Justina after this pleasing experience …
But she is attractive and somehow, he is drawn to her in a way that he can’t quite explain. He wants this and so he’ll have it. He always gets what he wants, that is simply how the world is. How it should be.
Perhaps it’s just that she has good taste in paintings.
