[Fandom] Blake's 7/Saw
[Rating] PG
[Notes/Summary] On Gauda Prime, Blake meets a new ally. (Again, still haven't watched all of the series, or much of the Saw films, so apologies for any canon errors.)

Why? they all screamed as they were shot down or dragged away.

Blake never answered, but that wasn't because he didn't know.

Gauda Prime was a place where many things happened. Many of those things he wishes he could forget. But in the midst of them - blood pouring down his face and hot between his teeth, vision smoky, pain every time he tried to blink - he met someone who took him in, gave him shelter, and talked with him about many things.

A man in a hooded robe, with a low, rough voice as if he'd breathed too much already. With bony fingers and slow, careful speech. Who'd constructed simple traps from what he could find to keep the more troublesome elements of Gauda Prime from his door. Who'd constructed other traps. Who mentioned, once, the child he'd never had.

Who was the only person on the planet who spoke of redemption.

Blake had been ready to give up on that idea. He'd been starting to forget what he was fighting for. He'd been starting to forget how to fight at all. And when you saw so much cruelty all around you, you began to wonder why you should fight. How you could possibly make anything better.

They talked of how to make things better. Of burning away the bad to find the good below. Raw skin, an open wound, scar tissue. Blake stared at his face in the mirror and wondered who was behind it. The wound down his eye and cheek pinned him to this reality, this moment. But it led him back to the past, too, and the past was nothing but failure.

Most people would crumble when exposed to real tests. (Neither of them had.) Most people, when it came down to it, would save themselves and leave others to die. (They'd both given their all to protect others.) Most people were flawed and the flawed rose to the top and perpetuated systems of horror and justified it because what else can you expect? People are only human.

Some people wouldn't fail.

And then you would know that.

Blake needed to know that.

He and his benefactor talked. Exchanged stories. Neither of them ever explained the why. They both knew.
