[Notes/Summary] Ian/Dinah. Their dates aren't what other people would think of as such.
It isn't really what most people would call dates. If they go to places, it's a museum or a library or a science fair because Dinah is happiest there and Ian thinks they're sort of cool and likes her being happy. Or they're in the park, or the garden, or on a sofa, resting against each other, speaking when the mood takes one of them, her usually with a book, or a notebook, or a laptop. The click of keys, the rustle of pages. Her shoulder warm against his.
Mandy said, worriedly, You do offer to take her out to places, don't you? and Ingrid rolled her eyes and said she'd die of boredom if she had their relationship. But Lloyd only said you know she doesn't know how to do normal girlfriend things. Just so you know, if you mess her around -
And Harvey didn't say anything, like he didn't see there was anything that needed mentioning.
Dinah herself said, frowning, If you want to have a proper date -
Excuse me? Ian said, pulling a face at her. How can you doubt the veracity of these? I can assure you they've been scientifically validated as Real Dates. I included graphs and everything.
(That Dinah, who hates a lot of things that regular people like, would make an offer like that for him, makes him want to song-and-dance along the street like the guy getting the girl in a musical.)
The conversation ebbs and flows like sunlight. Her comments on what she's working on. Him trying to understand it. Him trivialising everything like he does so she can smile at it. Occasionally, a real question, and a real answer. Every so often, kissing over whatever study materials she's got balanced on her lap, or behind a shelf of fossils.
Ian is not a big fan of pop psychology, but he thinks maybe they're both just glad not to be against the world. Growing up a socially awkward orphan genius probably has much the same effect as discovering when you're seven that you need to form a resistance group at your school because everyone else is mind-controlled. It gives you a different perspective. Or he's just too lazy not to enjoy sprawling against his girlfriend and watching the day go by, but there's no harm in that, either.
