Summary: Simon goes looking for River.
“River?”
Simon was trying to keep any tone of panic out of his voice and just about succeeding. River was just somewhere else on the ship, that was all. He’d find her in a moment, any moment. There was no need to panic. None at all.
“River?”
A movement. Simon felt a rush of warm relief go over him and darted through into the cockpit. River was sitting cross-legged, staring out at the cold stars beyond.
“River, what are you doing in here?” Simon asked, keeping his voice gentle. “You haven’t been playing with anything, have you?”
“Lost,” she said, not answering his question. “I was lost.”
Simon paused before trying to answer that. River didn’t turn to look at him.
“Everyone’s lost,” she said. “Universe full of little lost things, rattling all over. Lost stars, lost planets, lost people. People lose their memories, you know. It all gets buried under everything else you know and you forget. Faulty register.”
“Yes,” Simon agreed because he did understand that, sort of. “The memory is very unpredictable.”
“Misfiled,” River said, finally turning to look at him. “Everything gets put away wrong and we can’t get it back.”
“We can get things back,” Simon said, moving over and putting an arm around her shoulders. “Most things. The things that matter.”
River shook her head slightly.
“Some things you don’t want back,” she said.
Her eyes were filling with tears and Simon decided it was better not to ask.
