Title: Pain
Rating: PG
Summary: Ryu reflects on what it is to be in pain. Spoilers for episode 38.
It didn’t really hurt to be stabbed. Not at first.
Ryu supposed he shouldn’t have been surprised by that. People said all the time in stories that being stabbed wasn’t particularly painful. Sharp things could easily pierce the skin too quickly to hurt until you processed what had happened to you. Pain was such an elusive concept really. Everyone talked about it like it was a solid thing, as though you knew when you were in pain and why you were in pain. In Ryu’s experience, that wasn’t true at all. Things that should hurt didn’t and things that ought to be good were like being touched with hot pokers.
And being stabbed didn’t hurt at all. It was quite frightening to realise that the knife was inside his chest, tearing through skin and blood vessels and it was quite strange to find that his legs suddenly wouldn’t support him any more. He found himself thinking vaguely that falling over would probably hurt because the floor was made of wood and it generally hurt to fall on wood floors. But Kyuu caught hold of him and then everyone started shouting and screaming and that hurt because it seemed to reverberate inside his head, getting louder and louder until he wanted to scream himself because of the noise. There were things he wanted to say too, he needed to apologise to Kyuu, to Kinta, to Megu, to Hongou-sensei. He wanted to laugh openly Shiba Asae’s face, tell her what would happen to those who failed his grandfather this badly. But he couldn’t talk any more. His chest was hot but the rest of him … the rest of him was so very, very cold. Even his eyes felt cold and very heavy and now his chest was hurting, so very badly that he couldn’t believe he hadn’t realised it hurt before.
But then, pain was like that, wasn’t it?
